Hon. Sir William Deane AC, KBE, QC
On March 13, 2008, members of the World Harmony Run team met with Sir William Deane at his office in Manuka, ACT.
Sir William had a distinguished legal career, culminating in over 10 years of service as a Justice of the High Court of Australia. He then served as Governor-General of Australia from 1995 until 2001. In 2001, he was awarded the Sydney Peace Prize, "for his consistent support of vulnerable and disadvantaged Australians and his strong commitment to the cause of reconciliation."
In his recent historic “Sorry” speech, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd described Sir William as, “a quiet, persistent conscience.” He was invited to sit with former Prime Ministers Whitlam, Fraser, Hawke and Keating in the chamber of the House of Representatives during the Prime Minister’s speech.
Sir William Deane offered his support for the World Harmony Run with the following comments:
“The World Harmony Run is a spectacular means of promoting mutual respect and understanding and Peace in our world.
I congratulate and send my warm good wishes to all involved in the 2008 World Harmony Run in Australia.”
Upon hearing that the team would soon be meeting Bob Randall at Uluru, Sir William commented that the last time he held a flaming torch was at Uluru - during the Olympic torch relay in 2000!
We are very grateful to Sir William for accepting the role of a National Patron of the 2008 World Harmony Run.
