Bulgaria 18 May: Svilengrad – Plovdiv

Today, after a couple of months of dry heat we were blessed with rain. All the runners were happy to run and to breathe the fresh air of the valley our road took us through.

We had our first meeting in Haskovo. In the city, we were joined by some promising athletes from the local sports school; they had compassion and did not run to their full capacity, so we were not left behind.

We ran with them to the main square, where a group of children and representatives of the mayor greeted us and gave their support for the ideals of the Run.

We went on, and after the sun came out behind the clouds to bless us in its turn, we had a picnic to regain our energy.

On the road we met this shepherd and his goat.

People who spend much of their lives in seclusion are also wishing to have a better world, and are willing to offer their goodwill.

Our next stop was Plovdiv, the second biggest city in Bulgaria, which is famous for its hills and the big hearts of its citizens.

There, a team of young wrestlers and athletes was waiting to run with us.

We went to a very nice school together, where a large group of pupils welcomed us with loud cheers.

The representative of the school said a few words, offering his support and encouraging us to continue to spread the message of harmony and the school's wishes for world harmony wherever we go.

A big group of runners and children ran with us to the city hall, where the deputy mayor received the torch.

Later, when we were walking around the centre of the city after the ceremony was over, we had the chance to meet these two traditional dance groups.
