Canada 2 May: Red Deer, Alberta

Live from the road report 2/5/06 from Jauvana Westwood:

Neither rain nor snow nor gale force winds will steer the World Harmony Run off its course!

It was a VERY blustery cold spring day as we entered Red Deer, Alberta to meet with Mayor Morris Flewwelling at City Hall. Because of the weather, the Mayor very kindly invited us into his office to meet with him as he signed a proclamation from the City of Red Deer declaring May 2, 2006 as World Harmony Day.

The Mayor then took a moment to add his wish for world harmony as he held the torch. He was very welcoming and encouraged us to come back next year with the possibility of doing some kind of event with the children from different elementary schools at City Hall.

The team then moved on to GW Smith Elementary School, where an enthusiastic vice-principal, Verne Payne, rallied the "team" to go outdoors and run around the school with the WHR torch.

He first introduced us to the students and we took a moment to explain what the WHR is about and that they were participating with others like themselves from all around the world.

After the run, the students and teachers assembled in the cloak room, in a large circle and in silence passed the torch from hand to hand. After a group picture, when asked if they would like us to come back next year, there was a unanimous, resounding ‘yes!”.
