Canada 5 May: Melfort - Nipawin

Live from the Road report compiled by Sutapa Adelman from notes by Jauvana Westwood:

5/5/06, Melfort, Saskatchewan.

Reynolds Central School

The principal of this School, Mariette Baker-McDermid, has incorporated the WHR handbook into the school curriculum. The whole school was very keen and held an assembly where each division had something to perform. The small children had learned and performed the WHR song. Another class did the WHR song in sign language. Another group did a dance and another group read poetry in pairs on "What Harmony Means to me", and there was a slide show showing what harmony meant to them in their art work. They were all wonderful!

At the end of the assembly, their cross-country team met outside to take the torch to Brunswick School. They waited while the rest of the school filed out of the auditorium and touched the torch as they left.

Brunswick School

The torch was passed from Reynolds Central School to Brunswick School and the Brunswick runners ran with the torch to Broadway School. They attended the assembly at Broadway School and then returned to their own school.

Broadway School

We began here with a DVD presentation to the school assembly on the World Harmony Run, appreciated by the Principal Steven Kemp, students and teachers. At the end of the assembly, the children were all given WHR ribbons; they then lined up outside and each one of them touched the torch. The cross-country team then took the torch to Maude Burke Elementary School.

Maude Burke Elementary School

It was a beautiful, clear day as the students from Broadway Elementary ran with the torch and passed it on to the students of Maude Burke Elementary. This is the second year that Maude Burke has participated in the WHR, thanks to Principal Randy Steciuk.

All the students were lined up outside as the torch was passed from hand to hand and each child had a chance to add wishes for world harmony.

After everyone had passed the torch, the cross-country team took the torch for a short run and the rest of the student body went in another direction for a World Harmony Walk. As the cross-country team came back first, they made a tunnel and when the rest of the student body arrived they came through the tunnel with a "high five".

The children were very excited and we saw them later during their lunch hour playing WHR with a stick as a torch. The joy on their faces was a delight to us.

Nipawin, Saskatchewan

Central Park Elementary School

At Central Park Elementary School in Nipawin, Saskatchewan the vice-principal Shelly Pierlot and teachers brought 250 kindergarten - grade 3 students into the auditorium to watch the WHR video. After WHR team members interacted with the children about the reasons for the WHR, the student body went out into the field and made a huge circle. Then the cross-country team from grade three held the torch and ran around the circle several times with a "high five" so that the children could add their wishes to the torch. The ceremony finished with all the children running in around a WHR team member holding the torch and shouting "Harmony begins with me!!"
