Canada 17 May: Espanola - Owen Sound

Today we started running from Espanola, under clear blue skies.

Our first meeting was on Birch Island, where we met the coordinator of the Great Spirit Circle Trail, Kevin Keshkawkogan.

The Great Spirit Circle Trail encompasses eight First Nation communities on Manitoulin Island and in the Sagamok region of Northeastern Ontario, Canada. It is truly one of the most beautiful and serene regions in Northeastern Ontario. Manitoulin Island is the largest freshwater island in the world.

Next, we met with the members of the Tehkummah Triangle and UCW Seniors Club in Gordon’s Park. Our tight schedule did not allow us to spend as much time as we wished with this lovely group.

This part of Manitoulin Island is extremely beautiful, with a great number of lakes surrounding us on all sides.

The ferry ride from Manitoulin Island to the Bruce Peninsula was yet another highlight of our day.

This ferry was dedicated as a Sri Chinmoy Peace Ship about 20 years ago. Here we stand at the commemorating plaque with Captain Robert Schreiber, who later invited us onto the bridge for a Captain's view from behind the wheel.

In Tobermory, about 30 students from St. Edmunds School became members of our team by singing our song and running with the torch.

We also stopped briefly at the Bruce Trail Visitor Centre and met the manager, Jennifer Barrat.

Next was Lion’s Head where about 350 students from the Bruce Peninsula District School welcomed us warmly.

On to Wiarton, where Mayor Gwen Gilbert joined our team running through town to meet with the famed Groundhog, Wiarton Willie, who faithfully predicts the coming of spring each February.

On our run into and out of town we were escorted by the Fire Chief with lots of loud siren blasts!

Many thanks to the Owen Sound Best Western Hotel, which provided us with a beautiful complimentary room for our stay overnight.

As a perfect end to our day, we met Owen Sound's Mayor Ruth Lovell and friends, who insisted on paying for our second room at the Best Western; we thank them for their thoughtfulness and generosity.
