Canada 7 October: Rossland - Bridesville

Gratitude to the Rossland Prestige Mountain Resort for providing us with free accommodations for the night. Thank you!

TEAM A

We started our day with three morning events in Rossland, BC.

and made our way to Ecole des Seps Sommets elementary school.

We were greeted by a few classes of students, along with Loise Charland, their very friendly principal.

One of the parents had participated in some of our events when he was a teenager.

He was happy to see the World Harmony Run at the school.

They joined us in the Maclean Elementary school gym, where we held a ceremony for both schools.

Loise Charland and Teresa (principal of MacLean Elementary) were each presented with a certificate of appreciation, for their invovement with the run, as well as a World Harmony Run shirt.
We all gathered outside and passed the torch before the team left to our next event at Rossland High School.

There, a few blocks away, were a group of grade 8 and 9 students greeting us in front of their school. We presented a short ceremony, explained the purpose of the run and took a few pictures.

We left the students of Rossland to continue our BC route, passing the community of Paulson, Christina Lake, Grand Forks and finally reaching Eholt.

On our way, we ran into a kind man, Don, at the Christina Lakeside General Store. He told us that he saw the team running yesterday, so we explained the run to him, relieving him of his curiosity.

The team of 6 girls ran 72 km through winding roads, surrounded by wonderful, shimmering lakes, bright green and yellow trees and the sweet smell of pine. The 12 km each runner covered was the perfect distance to visually explore the surrounding beauty. With the Harmony Run torch in one hand, a smile on our face, and peace in our heart, each runner very much enjoyed this portion of the day.

TEAM B

We’re running in the B.C. interior and in this particular section it looks as though the prairies have found their way into the mountains.

We ran along and up some rolling mountainsides and experienced once again the joy of the 5k uphill climb – or rather, Medur got the full brunt of the ‘enjoyment’.

The vistas were stunning and absolutely unique to Canada, with wide-open grasslands bordered by lush hills on one side and desert hills on the other. Greg has been on the Run since Kingston and commented many times that this was his favorite part to this point.

Medur throwing a large rock into the creek beside the road in Greenwood.

In Greenwood we were met at the Old Train Tunnel just outside of town by Principal Daryl Turner and a few of the students from Greenwood Elementary.

Anna, Maddie and Darren joined the team to take the Torch on a 2k run to the school.

There we were received by their fellow students who gave us a great cheer when the runners bound into the gym.

The kids kept up their enthusiasm by cheering as loudly as they could every chance they could.

In fact, when we took the torch outside the teachers suggested that we keep on doing laps since the students were getting such a charge from it.

Every one had an opportunity to hold the torch and make their own wish for World Harmony.

Leaving Greenwood we ran into Mary and golfing buddies Dale and Al buying eggs at a roadside stand. Anvita made a trade of the torch for the eggs and all three roadside patrons got to make their own silent wish for harmony. With his own sigh of relief, Anvita handed back the eggs more or less intact.

In Rock Creek the runners Wilf, Medur, and Greg discovered that the so-called 200 metre jaunt to the Elementary school was actually a 2 kilometre trek. The students patiently waited for the runners to approach and when the torch finally came into view they responded with loud and boisterous cheering and waving that went on for a good five minutes.

After receiving the runners, the kids followed them around the playing field before gathering into the gymnasium.

There we all watched the video presentation and then Medur led the kids in some harmony exercises.

They then gave another rousing ovation when their Principal Brian Roy received the torch and made a lap around the gym. Then all the students went on their way, each touching the torch as they exited the gym.

After the ceremony and the remaining uphill climbs, we all settled into the Ramada Grand Forks for a rest.
