Costa Rica 26 July: Puerto Limón

Students of Balvanero Vargas school pose with the torch before embarking on the relay run. The torch is held by social worker Karol Smith.

Limón is a port city located on the Atlantic coast of Costa Rica, where Karabi and Bhashwar were born. This year they met with old friends and relatives and reminisced about fond memories of the past.

Our good friend, Minister Irma Drummand, and Karol Smith, a social worker in several schools in Limon welcomed the Harmony runners with big smiles and open arms. Five primary schools came together to organize the relay run that would carry the Harmony Run torch from school to school from around 9:00am until 1:00pm. The children also made up posters and drawings about peace, love and harmony in the world, performed songs and plays, and recited poems to celebrate the event. Welcoming speeches from teachers and in some cases students as well, and the singing of their National Anthem preceded each relay.

On route to the next school called ‘Limoncito’, we ran along an old train tracks for a while because the normal routes were too busy with traffic and were a much longer distance to the next school.

The Harmony Run torch is used to light the torch at the ‘Limoncito’ School.
