Cyprus 14 June

On Tuesday we flew to the sun-drenched island of Cyprus for two days of running. First we rented a jeep, but unfortunately the air-conditioning did not work so we had to poke our heads out of the window to stay cool.

Having checked into the hotel we set off on our run. It was very hot and the landscape was very dry. However, running conditions were actually quite favourable thanks to a refreshing breeze. Vast golden fields of cereal lay lazily under the clearest of blue skies, creating beautiful pastel panoramas. Pine forests gradually replaced pale green shrubs dotting the tumbling yellow hills as we reached the Troodos mountains, where we did most of the first day’s running, which naturally included some uphill stretches.

The running finished, we oriented towards a nice restaurant. This led to exciting driving along the mountainsides, with thrilling views: orchards descending in terraces down the slopes and limestone mines to name a few. We found a very homely restaurant in one of the mountain villages, with very friendly patrons. Apparently Cypriots really like their salt. As runners a little extra salt is appreciated.
