Germany 12 May: Augsburg - Bingen

The International team, boosted by local Augsburg supporters, started with a run from the City Hall to Waldorfschule in Lechhausen. We were greeted by 250 lovely children in their assembly hall.

The younger children performed together on recorders and then sang for us, the older children recited a moving poem by Frederick Schiller, ‘Words of Faith’.

After our presentation and song the children ran outside with the torch, their exuberance best described by a picture.

In conjunction with our side visit to Augsburg we ran into the centre of Gersthofen to meet the Mayor. He was extremely friendly and in addition to welcoming us to the town, gave us a private guided tour of the Balloon Museum. His enthusiastic commentary educated us all on how the ballooning originated and developed in this area.

Continuing our scheduled route we ran down from a forested hill, and entered into the valley where the lovely city of Bad Urach was welcoming us. A very authentic-looking city (received city rights in the 13th century) with coloured houses, built with wooden structures that made us feel as if we were entering into another time, untouched by the modern architecture and its sometimes cold and anonymous buildings. We ran to the city's main square, to the municipality, where a table was nicely decorated with ‘brezels’ (huge pretzels) and drinks to welcome us.

There, the very young and sportive-looking Mayor came to welcome us and we had a very nice meeting with him. We then kept running in the beautiful spring-blossomed area with hilly countryside, yellow flowers, little clear creeks and sun in a clear blue sky.

Gratitude spontaneously fills your heart when you can run through countries that offer the hospitality of the citizens and the beauty of the countryside. A true gift that accompanies us step by step on the road.
