Greece 6 May: Ptolemaida - Metaxa
After having received the blessings of Alexander the Great yesterday, in the beautiful city of Thessaloniki and relaxing a little bit in the afternoon, it was time to get back on track towards Athens.
By the way, Thessaloniki was the name of Alexander's sister. She was married to a general in Alexander's father, Philip's, army. After having conquered the city, the general named it after her.
We left rather early in the morning and started our run in the small city of Ptolemaida after a two hour car drive. The weather was perfect, nice and sunny but not too hot. Today promised to be a stressless day, because there where no meetings scheduled. Greece seems to be asleep on Saturdays. The scenery is lovely; small limestone hills and green grassy slopes. It's not yet so dry here in the north of Greece.
Along the main road we reached, rather soon, the city Kozani, where the sleeping place of today is located. We decided, however, to keep on running in order to take away some of tomorrow's miles.
It proved to be a good decision. From a distance the first snowcapped peaks of the Olympos mountain range came in view, a nice view indeed! The next few days we will be running under the guidance of Zeus, who according to the ancient Greek mythology resides with his fellow gods on the top of mount Olympos.
We passed the small town of Servia, situated on a long and narrow lake cradled by grassy mountains. The bridge across the lake was maybe one of the nicest parts of today's run.
We decided to run until the township of Metaxa. Most runners on the team had run about 14 km. Challenging, but nothing extreme.
