The World Harmony Run began with a symbolic opening ceremony at the Höfði house, just like last year.

This year, Prime Minister Geir H. Haarde attended the opening ceremony to offer his best wishes to the World Harmony Runners on their run around Iceland.

In his speech, Geir said:

"I congratulate you on the occasion of this Run, which is about to start. I'm afraid that you got it slightly wrong just now when you said that I would be actually running the first few steps. However, I am truly delighted to hand the torch over to the first runner. I wish you all, who are behind this Run, success and joy, and I would like to underline the values that were mentioned earlier: friendship, harmony, sincerity, understanding and tolerance."

Having received the torch from Geir, the runners began their journey around Iceland, which will cover 1508 km and span 18 days. We ran out of Reykjavík onwards to Hellisheiði.

The weather was something else than pleasant, for just as we passed through the city limits, the wind picked up to such an extent that our team of experienced World Harmony Runners could not remember such weather. Climbing some of the hills with the wind in our faces, demanded a near-superhuman effort, but somehow we made it. We hope it will get better tomorrow, but the forecast is rather bleak...
