We slept at Hofsós village last night, which is a lovely little village with a lot of history. We then retraced our steps and started running down from Lágheiði hill, where we ended yesterday. As the fog was quite dense at Hofsós, we were none too optimistic that we would get a chance to behold the fabled natural beauty of Lágheiði. However, as soon as we entered Lágheiði, the fog suddenly cleared and the Stífluvatn Lake appeared before us in all its majesty.
Martin started today's running at the shelter at Lágheiði. On his way he met a couple from Reykjavík who were on their way to Ólafsfjörður town and really wanted to get their picture taken with the torch.
Martin continued running until he came upon a farmhouse where he attracted the attention of a mother and young boy. The boy, Þórgnýr Jónsson, got to to run with the torch and, afterwards, his mother supplied Martin with refreshments.
Still later on, Ágúst was stopped by two ladies who were very curious about the Run They had come driving from the the other side, where they had first seen a girl running with the torch, then a boy with a torch and now Ágúst with a torch! Ágúst explained the principles of the World Harmony Run to them, as well as the principles of leapfrogging.
While the boys were thus running and having many experiences, the girls were also running. The girls were mostly running in the fog. Nevertheless, running conditions were good, and there was not much traffic; a few cars and one horse-rider.
The final kilometers of the day were run by our friends from the Running Club of Sauðárkrókur. This running club is probably the biggest in the country per capita, for 50 runners show up regularly at practices. When taken into account that the total number of inhabitants for Sauðárkrókur town is 2.620 and the total number of the whole of Skagafjörður county is 4.178, you've got somewhere between 1 or 2% turnout of the population. Not a bad statistic!
Árni Stefánsson is the leader of the club. Last year a group of men from the club ran with us, and so Árni felt it was only right to give the women a chance to run this time.
Herdís Klausen, Guðrún Kristín Sæmundsdóttir, Linda Hlín Sigurbjörnsdóttir, Ingibjörg Valgeirsdóttir and Edda Guðsteinsdóttir ran with us all the way into Sauðárkrókur town, our final destination of the day, a distance of 15 km, 2 km more than the men ran last year!
The day ended with a birthday party for our swimming queen Viktoría, who will be leaving for Reykjavík tomorrow, only to meet us again on Sunday, when she will swim across Hvalfjörður fiord.
