About the organisers
The World Harmony Run is one of the world's largest grassroots
movements to bring people together. Runners carry an Olympic style
torch to over 100 countries around the world, and each year over one
million people hold this torch and pass it on from hand to hand,
sharing their hopes for a better world. Everywhere the Run goes, it
partners locally with schools, community groups, sporting organisations
and politicians to make it truly a community based event.
Nelson Mandela and his wife Graca Machel hold the torch
with World Harmony Run founder Sri Chinmoy
The World Harmony Run was founded in 1987 by humanitarian leader Sri Chinmoy as a way to give voice to the deep human need for world harmony and
oneness. Sri Chinmoy won international acclaim for his numerous
initiatives to unite people from many cultures and walks of
life to work for a more fulfilling world. An athlete, philosopher, artist and poet, Sri Chinmoy, who passed away in October 2007, dedicated his life to advancing the ideals of world
harmony and oneness.
