Mark from England joined the team last night after a long trip from Bristol. Unfortunately we had to say farewell to our Ukrainian runner, Dima, and our Italian runner, Andrea. In the morning we passed through Assisi and surrounding towns. On the way, we found time to quickly visit a church, a garden and a room where Saint Francis of Assisi lived. Itâs a very peaceful and inspiring place to visit early in the morning, before the tourist buses arrives.
We quickly covered the distance, and by midday we found ourselves winding our way up the steep hill to the town of Todi. There we were met by school children, which noisily and joyfully welcomed us. It was great to see them pass the torch to each other and they were so enthusiastic as they ran around with us waving the flags and carrying the torch.
Although there were many hills, everyone enjoyed running in the beautiful April sunshine. In the distance we could see snow-capped mountains, above all the highest peak of the Apennines - almost 3000m high!
This inspired us to run fast together to cover the distance very quickly.
We ran downhill for about 5 km, and it was very easy, but the last stretch became much harder, when we had to run uphill to Orvieto, our final destination for today.
We ran through the narrow town roads to reach the main square where a magnificent church stood. On the steps of the church we were greeted by three city representatives. They were so friendly and whole-heartedly agreed with the World Harmony Runâs ideas of how sport could be such an inspirational instrument to bring people together. The city council so generously put us in accommodation and treated us to a traditional Italian meal.
Distance: 90km
