Italy 18 June: Carpi - Imola

Italian for World Harmony Runners:

Please pass the torch! = Per favore, passa la fiaccola!

Corriamo per l'armonia e l'amicizia = We run for harmony and friendship!

Run to the left! = Stai' a sinistra!

Grazie! = Thank you!

Cinque (5) kilometri diritto! = approx. 5 kilometres straight on...

Un Capuccino, per favore! = One capuccino, please!

Allora! = (everybody uses it in excitement but nobody knows what it means....)

We started in Carpi, from the huge city square. The city representative and the founder of the "Maratona d'Italia memorial Enzo Ferrari" sent us off (we got great Ferrari caps...); runners joined us for the first kilometres out of the city! Again, a hot day!

On our way to Modena more runners were waiting for us, and accompanied us all the way to the centre of Modena. The mayor, the sport representative and kids where waiting for us. TV Modena reported!

From Modena on, we went east on the Via Emilia: always straight ahead, for the next almost 200 kilometres! A safe, but busy road. At least nobody can get lost...

In Castelfranco Emilia, the mayor and the city sport representative greeted us. The city offered refreshments and pizza! The "assessore" also ran a mile with us, local TV reported!

In Anzola, we were welcomed by the deputy mayor. This day turned out to be extremely busy. To have all those meetings, plus running in the heat is quite a challenge!

Taming the beast!

When we approached Bologna, the police took Marlin from Germany on a different road, so we started a search mission. Luckily, we caught her before the meeting with the city representative of Bologna. She had to run quite a distance in the heat!

After a short stop in San Lazzaro di Savena, where we also met kids, and half-way to Castel San Pietro Terme, more runners joined us. A city representative welcomed us in front of the castle and great refreshments were served!

Our guest runners were inspired to extend their runs and stayed with us until Imola. Local runners were waiting there, and we ended the day in the centre of the old city, passing through old (and narrow) streets and historical buildings.

Imola is quite involved in peace projects all over the world. The city representative gave us a brief report and offered nice ceramic souvenirs to the team; the ceremony ended with traditional Italian sweets.
