Luxembourg 7 May: Luxembourg City - German Borders

Our morning started in the Centre of Luxembourg where we met with the police who were escorting us today. Some were old friends from their assistance the day before. We split into 2 teams with an escort for each team directing us on the quiet bike path routes through the delightfully green countryside.

We met the Mayor of Contern, a village of 800 people, where we where warmly received by the local community members. Refreshments gratefully consumed, and our song cheerfully sung, we continued on the journey to the German border.

Our escort was reduced to a single motorbike, which still managed to ensure we were given right of way at every intersection. After a 20km winding journey through the villages and hills of Luxembourg, we unexpectedly arrived at a winery reception that had been organised by Stephanie as a surprise for the runners. Here we met the Mayor of Scheierbierg and a number of wine growers, who provided us with delicious white grape juice, a speciality of the area.

Crossing the Mosel River we said goodbye to Luxembourg and continued our journey through Germany.

Our first German meeting was in Merzig. As we had to run through the rain we arrived pretty drenched at the City Square. The Mayor and townspeople stood there with their umbrellas to welcome us. We were welcomed into a big hall with a typical market selling all kinds of local crafts as well as cars and wedding gowns - a very funny combination of products.

After that we sadly said goodbye to our main driver, Gabi from the Czech Republic, then ran another 40km accompanied by light and heavy showers and intermittent sunshine.

Distance: 110km
