Spain 16 March: Deltebre – Poblet

This morning we started out from Deltebre with the mayor and the children from the rowing club.

Despite a few problems with the van´s gears we made fast progress up the coast to the town of Cambrils and then on to Reus.

From here we headed inland through Montblanc and on to our final destination - the monastery in Poblet . The monastery is situated amongst peaceful vineyards and looked extremely mystical in the evening haze.

We joined the monks for evening vespers and then dinner. Dinner was held in a large hall with long tables along the walls. Three monks served us soup as we sat in silence while another monk read aphorisms continiously from the bible. Soup was followed by salad, bread and excellent cheese. For dessert we had fruit accompanied by a cup of hot malt coffee. Everybody in the room had finished their meal and were sitting in silence except for the harmony runners who were busy filling their stomachs not knowing how many courses were still to come. We soon became aware that everybody was waiting for us and as soon as the last runner finished his malt coffee the monks stood up and gave thanks for the meal. We then joined the abbot in an ante room where he blessed the torch and spoke to all the runners.

This night we are sleeping in the monastery and are very grateful to all the monks for their warm hospitality and their friendly humour.
