Spain 17 March: Monastery Poblet – Monastery Montserrat

Yesterday we arrived at the beautiful 12th century monastery of Poblet – a world heritage of UNESCO.

Today began with morning mass in which the abbot offered a special prayer for the success of the Harmony Torch, followed by breakfast and a tour of the monastery with Father Lluis.

From Poblet we headed north-east through the picturesque vineyards of Catalonia to the town of Santa Coloma De Queralt. We were greeted by some young runners and their trainers from the Santa Coloma athletics club who guided us to the town hall.

The mayor received us with warm words and enjoyed our rendition of the World Harmony Run Song . From there we ran to a local school called Ceip Cor De Roure (heart of the oak) where we were greeted by sixty young children enjoying their lunch. In the late afternoon as the temperature fell dramatically we began the steep climb up into the clouds towards the monastery of Montserrat. The road snaked its way along the steep cliffs giving us a beautiful view of Catalonia. Eventually the monastery itself came into view – a large impressive edifice perched on the top of the mountain.

A monk from the monastery invited us to see a video presentation about the history of Montserrat. Afterwards he blessed the torch and said “We give thanks for your visit and feel oneness with your aspirations for peace and brotherhood”.
