Another shining day on one of the most southern roads of Europe. It was sad to say goodbye to Portugal and our two friends from Coimbra and Lisbon, but the nice reception we received on the border introduced us gently to this new country. Some members of a Spanish running club from Ayamonte joined us as we entered Spain.

Otro día brillante en una de las carreteras más al sur de Europa. Nos apenó despedirnos de Portugal y de nuestros amigos de Coimbra y Lisboa, pero tuvimos la bonita recepción que tuvimos en la frontera con España, nos introdujo gentilmente a un nuevo país. Miembros del Club de Atletismo Ayamonte se encargaron de tomar el relevo entrando en España.

Desde la frontera entramos en Ayamonte donde el Patronato Municipal de Deportes nos obsequió con una placa conmemorativa y avituallamiento para continuar le ruta. Pierre, nuestro corredor de Francia, es el único que habla español y nos sirvió de gran ayuda como traductor.

As the only member of the team who speaks Spanish, Pierre from France was invaluable as our translator.

The morning sun of southern Spain guided us to Huelva, the town where Christopher Columbus first set out to discover new lands.

El sol matinal del sur de España nos guió hasta Huelva, la ciudad donde Cristobal Colón tomó la salida para descubrir nuevas tierras.

We were fortunate to receive an invitation to see replicas of his magnificent ships.

Tuvimos la suerte de recibir una invitación para ver las réplicas de sus magníficas carabelas.

We tried to convince Columbus to change his plans and to join us on the run. Although he liked our map, he suggested a quicker route by sea.

Tratamos de convencer a Colón de que cambiase sus planes y se uniera a nuestra carrera. Aunque le gustó nuestro mapa, él sugirió otra ruta más rápida por mar.

As we hit the road again we were escorted for 16km to the next town by the police. They were very grateful for the waving and applause that they received as they announced our arrival.

De nuevo en la carretera fuimos escoltados 16 km hasta la población siguiente por la policía. Ellos también estaban agradecidos por los saludos y aplausos que recibían mientras iban anunciando nuestra llegada.

When the town of El Rocio appeared, we were blown away by its beauty.

Cuando el poblado del Rocío apareció ante nosotros, nos quedamos pasmados por su belleza.

Hareen, our coordinator for Spain, explained the religious importance of this town where pilgrims come to pay their respects to the Statue of the Virgin Mary. We all thought the town was like a movie set or a picture from the Wild West.

As we ran to the Cathedral in the town centre we admired the sandy streets, the horses trotting by and the local people wearing traditional clothes.

Corriendo hacia la Ermita en el centro de la aldea, admiramos las calles arenosas, los caballos trotando y muchos lugareños vistiendo trajes tradicionales.

We were fortunate to arrive just when a religious procession of one of the many fraternities that worship the Virgin of El Rocío was entering this sacred and ancient Church.

Justo cuando llegamos tuvimos la suerte de asistir a una ceremonia religiosa de una de las muchas Hermandades que veneran a la Virgen del Rocío , entrando en el Santuario.

The transition from the emotive Portugal to wonderful Spain could not have been more harmonious. Viva Espana!

La transición desde el emotivo Portugal a la maravillosa España no podía haber sido más armoniosa. ¡Viva España!
