USA World Heritage and local cultural or historical locations visited:

USA

USA 27 May 2006: Mancos, CO to Bluff, UT

 Mesa Verde

UNESCO listing: http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/27

Mesa Verde, a large flat topped mountain. Mesa literally means ‘table’ and verde is ‘green’.

It is so huge that it takes hours to drive up the winding road to the top. It was home of Anasazi and other Native American Tribes for thousands of years and is now a National Park visited by millions each year.

31 May 2010 - Mesa Verde - up close with cattle

As we were passing through Mesa Verde we were delayed at a traffic light for an inordinate amount of time due to, wait for it, a real live cattle crossing complete with genuine cowboy. Yee Haw

Monticello and the U.of V. in Charlottesville

world heritage site listing: http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/442/

"Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826), author of the American Declaration of Independence and third president of the United States, was also a talented architect of neoclassical buildings. He designed Monticello (1769–1809), his plantation home, and his ideal 'academical village' (1817–26), which is still the heart of the University of Virginia. Jefferson's use of an architectural vocabulary based upon classical antiquity symbolizes both the aspirations of the new American republic as the inheritor of European tradition and the cultural experimentation that could be expected as the country matured.
