Uganda 18 November: Kampala - Jinja

When we came to Uganda we had an idea that there would be a relay outside of the city, but we didn’t know exactly where or who would make up the team. This, as well as many other aspects of our adventure, came together without much work at all. After our ceremony with Kampala City Parents’ School, we sat down with the Headmaster, Mr. Bbala Kawamara, and several of the teachers. Very soon I heard my mouth asking who in the room would want to come with us on a run from Kampala to Jinja on the weekend. Immediately 6 hands shot up. Jinja, Uganda’s reputation as the “Source of the Nile” made it one of the places I longed to visit, and suddenly the torch had a team to carry it.

The team was made up of Lydia, Sam, Richard, Ronald, Roy and Joan. Each of them brought something special to the trip. And even though none of them had much practice running, they all ran their best and pushed themselves to do another kilometer, and then another. They have the spirit of giving their best to the world, for sure.

Spirits were not dampened when the torch broke about half way to Jinja - we just ran with the World Harmony Run flag instead.

After arriving in Jinja, everyone had a nice simple meal to feed the weary body and then soaked in some of Mother Nature’s finest. We went to a park where the River Nile spills out of Lake Victoria and took a short boat ride into the historic waters.

Well done team. You gave the World Harmony Run feet, and we hope that we gave you a special experience in return. Our program is simple, as it ought to be. Serving people and creating Harmony around us is also simple when we put one foot in front of another and keep going.
