Ukraine 4 June (Team 2): Berdiansk-Donetsk

Early in the morning we had to leave our nice place at the sea side, but not without a last glimpse at the beautiful sunny beach...

At Primorskaya Square a team from the local TV-station was already preparing interview the runners and take a few shots as they started off

On the way to Mariupol we had two short, but nice meetings, after which Martin got lost once again.

Guided by the police he started off, expecting to be replaced by another runner after 5 kilometers. Now, when you have been part of the World Harmony Run team for a while, you get a feeling for distances and know quite exactly how far you have to go before someone else takes over.

After approximately 8 kilometers running Martin was pretty sure that something had gone wrong, so he jumped in the police car and started searching for his teammates, finding them in a small town nearby. All’s well that ends well!

The next meeting took place in Mariupol – in the park where we had the meeting there is a very nice monument dedicated to world harmony which has a bird drawing by Sri Chinmoy, founder of the World Harmony Run, symbolising mans upward yearning for harmony.

We were really happy to welcome a busload of local runners from Donetsk, who enabled us to cover the last 100 kilometers of the day. The run through the streets of Donetsk led us to the monument for Sergei Bubka – probably the best pole vaulter ever. He was Olympic Champion in 1988 and in the years 1983 - 97 became several times World Champion. He set 35 World Records and still holds the current record of 6.14 meters. What a honour to finish our day at his monument.

In the evening we picked up Jewgenij from Vienna at the railway station, who had undergone a 52 hours train odyssey in order to join the team.

Distance: 201km
