USA 17 April: Elizabeth, NJ to Slackwood, NJ
The day began with final preparations for departure. The details of managing a four month odyssey can at times be overwhelming, but we pulled it all together nicely to have one of the smoothest starts in our 15 year history.
The weather could not have been better and the miles went easy for all. It felt great to have the torch in hand once again. The magic of running with the torch never grows old. Peoples support and enthusiasm seem to carry you through the miles from one smile to another.
We exited the state of New York via the Goethals Bridge on our way to New Jersey. The first team out was greeted by some great friends who used to live in these parts. They were very happy to escort them through the small towns of northern New Jersey and carry the torch in the same spirit of harmony and friendship.
After a very nice lunch on the Raritan river in Highland Park, New Jersey we continued on our way to Princeton—a wonderfully quaint eastern college town that commands a visits and seems to be an ice cream haven. Here once again we were greeted by some friends from past runs who were all too happy to provide us with accommodation and a dinner for twice the size of the team.
We finished the day well fed, in a warm bed with visions of the miles ahead.
