USA 29 April: Butler, GA to Baconton, GA

A rare running relay pass from Edi to Francesco.

Julian was feeling strong today so he let it roll.

Americus, Georgia is probably best know for the headquarters and origins of ‘Habitat For Humanity’ (HFH), a nonprofit Christian housing ministry dedicated to eliminating substandard housing and making decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Habitat has built about 200,000 homes worldwide. Volunteers work with future homeowners to build or renovate housed, which are then sold to partner families at no profit.

The runners are greeted at the Habitat for Humanity.

We were warmly welcomed by Linda and Rosemary who have been working for HFH for quite a few years. They gave us a short tour of the grounds which included a museum of displays of the history of the organization since its roots in 1976 and sample of both poverty housing and new housing similar to that which HFH builds for the poverty stricken families in over 100 countries.

Before we departed the Global Village of HFH we were unexpectedly greeted by a Girl Scout troop of 10 young girls from Roswell, Georgia and some of their parents/counselors, Elizabeth, Liz and Beth. (All three women were coincidentally named Elizabeth but chose these shortened versions to distinguish between them).

It was a nice way to share our Harmony efforts with those who also are trying to guide and influence children with positive and constructive activities. The children were quite attentive and interested in what we were doing and seemed to enjoy our spontaneous presentation and singing performance of the WHR song , of course. We were hoping to buy some delicious and renowned Girl Scout Cookies, but they had already sold them all to fund this trip to the HFH Global Village.

Making dinner.

We would have liked to spend more time at the HFH Global Village, but as usual we have to keep moving on down the road, never getting a chance to spend much time with all of our new acquaintances who inspire us almost every step of the way.

Later in the day we ended up in Albany, Georgia for the night, being so kindly accommodated by the Courtyard Marriot Hotel. It is a big, clean and beautiful Hotel with hot Jacuzzi and swimming pool to help heal our weary legs.

Enjoying dinner. The boys team got caught on camera today thanks to WALB in Albany.

Today marks the end of our second full week of our four month journey around the U.S.A. for Harmony and Friendship. We have run about 1,100 miles so far and will soon start heading west after running into Tallahassee tomorrow.

Ulugbek was so happy to carry the torch over 3 miles today, despite having to walk because of a knee irritation.

We are so grateful to all those who support us and offer their good will and efforts to help create a better world for the future, especially the founder of this international event, Sri Chinmoy .

Arpan and Team Harmony
