USA 12 June: Carey, ID to Mountain Home, ID

Video of the first month in USA

Eating (and sleeping) on the Run

Another cool morning offered some peaceful and easy running as we left the Sun Valley area and headed west towards Mountain Home and Boise. The women’s team had lunch duty this morning and they made a delicious meal for everyone which we each ate at our own convenience.

For some, this may mean that you do not eat lunch until 3 or 4 in the afternoon. Running for four or more hours, the afternoon teams may not have the chance to eat until after they finish running their miles. Today we all had 11 or 12 miles to run so the excellent lunch became an early dinner for some of us.

After some long miles on the road through some rather hilly terrain, we had a great dinner waiting for us. Following an evening meeting with all three teams, we were able to enjoy a fantastic pasta dish by Bangshidhar and his crew. After filling up on this great dish along with a healthy salad, some of us still had room for our favorite dessert, ice cream.

One can talk all day about the joys of eating ice cream, but if it wasn’t for our long hours on the road burning up the calories we would not be able to enjoy ice cream as much as we do out here on the run. Ironically, some of us may not lose any weight even with four months of daily running if ice cream stays as popular as it is on our team. Fit, and not fat, is hopefully what we will become by the time we reach New York in August. Perhaps the viewers can determine this by the photographs as we progress along the road to fitness, and hopefully not fatness.

After our evening rituals like cleaning up after dinner and working on tomorrow’s schedule and today’s stories and photos, we were able to enjoy our nighttime accommodations offered kindly by the Sleep Inn of Boise and the Hampton Inn, both near to the local airport.

Ryan Preston of the Hampton Inn was very generous in offering two rooms even though his reservation list was full. The General Manager of the Sleep Inn, Eleanor Specht, was also quite generous in offering wonderful accommodations for two teams at her spacious and clean hotel. Without the kindness of those who offer us rooms for the night we would not be able to comfortably cover the miles carrying the Harmony Torch step by step as we traverse this vast and glorious land.
