USA 3 November: Jamaica NY

I woke up to the sound of wind whistling through the trees on a cold grey morning and remembered that we had a World Harmony Run event today in the neighborhood. A local school called New Dawn elementary had arranged a community event around the run.

Joy the principal and founder of New Dawn Elementary heard about the run from one of her teachers, Mitali Bandhu. Joy made it her mission to bring us to the school and invited the whole neighborhood to join in.

Our team of runners assembled in the driveway of Aspiration Ground, a venue which has hosted many World Harmony Run ceremonies. Huddled together we awaited the time for us to depart down 164th street to Jamaica Ave and then onto the New Dawn Elementary school.

As we were approaching the school clowns greeted us and offered their hopes and dreams for harmony. We continued on to the school and as we approached, the kids unable to contain their enthusiasm any longer, ran to greet us.

Together we approached the school and took the stage to introduce the run.

The children took great delight in guessing which countries we were all from. Then we sang them the World Harmony Run song composed by our founder Sri Chinmoy.

Afterwards the children learned our motto, Harmony begins with me! then became completely silent as they looked for harmony in their own hearts.

Next we went off on another run the length of the street to Jamaica Ave and before coming back and signing autographs for the children.

City Councilor Jim Gennero came to offer his support and thank the NYPD for their invaluable help in closing the street and ensuring a safe environment for the children.

Finally we enjoyed a delicious meal at a nearby Caribbean restaurant.
