USA 12 May: Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park - Moss Landing

Adhiratha reports:

Today the team was scheduled to cover 64 miles and to also attend programs at a school at mid day and a Boys and Girls club at 4:30 p.m. Therefore the WHR team split into three groups to cover the distance between Julia Pfeiffer State Park and Moss Landing,

The run up the coast was very beautiful with many picture perfect settings.

Some of the team members stopped by the river at a general store and sampled the great burritos and then sat in wonderful chairs cooling their feet in the river. Many people inquired about the run and held the torch.

This morning in order to reach the starting point, some of the runners vehicles traveled back over the same road. Many noticed that the morning light and traveling in the reverse direction brought whole new vistas and a deeper experience of the water’s color, the shoreline, massive rocks and the tall trees striking beauty.

Each turn around a bend or up a hill side revealed more wonders to the runners. In parts of the run,  there was a very strong head wind which required extra effort in order to move forward. This reminded some of the participants of the recent World Harmony Run in parts of Ireland.

Sujantra McKeever, author, yoga studio owner, and longtime runner carries the torch for Harmony.

Our first stop of the day was at the Captain Cooper Elementary school in Big Sur, CA. This was a beautiful school that was atop a hill with a very steep and long driveway (Atulya and Papaha had to work hard to climb this one.) We met with the coordinator, Yolanda Ortega, a very nice woman who was herself a marathon runner. She has run the Big Sur marathon that takes place at the end of April.

We had a nice run with the kids in their field that lies among beautiful hills. We presented our ceremony and song, and they regaled us with three songs from different grade groups. The kindergardeners sang a cute song, the 4th and 5th graders sang an interesting Hawaiin style song, "John Kanakanaka", and the 2nd graders sang "Rubber Duckie." We were so impressed and happy to hear these songs. The teachers remarked how precious their class of about 60 students were and we had to agree.

Paula, the principal, holds the torch.

All smiles, all joy.

Our second meeting was at the Boys and Girls Club in Seaside, CA.

We were greeted by a very energetic group of children who were keen to show us their athletic skills!

We had a nice run with the children which was recorded by the local T.V. station.

Marlene holds the torch with runners Teekhnata, Shyamala, and Jennifer.

Shambhu Vineberg--the first and foremost Executive Director of the World Harmony Run--holds the torch with Salil--our current Executive Director--outside the Boys and Girls Club.

The girls ran the torch north to Moss Landing - artichoke country.

Easy Palash!

Thank you to Maha's Lebanese Cuisine for a fantastic meal.

Thank you to the Bay Breeze Inn for great rooms.

The girls team (plus Atulya) were hosted by the Captain's Inn - a wonderful Bed and Breakfast in Moss Landing.

Our hostess, Melanie, and her two children came out to run with the torch.

Each room was uniquely thematic. Ours was called Sanctuary, a quiet retreat into the deep peace under the sea. This was by far our best accommodation on the run!
