USA 24 May: Taiban, NM - Clines Corners, NM
After a wonderful evening under the stars at Sumner Lake State Park, we woke up to a beautiful sunrise over the lake.
The women's team had to leave early to run their miles and then drive the scenic route to Santa Fe for an event there.
The landscape is changing quickly to a dry and vast expanse of hills dotted with desert shrubbery and very few trees.
While the women were running north towards Santa Fe the men's teams stayed in Fort Sumner for a while for a welcoming at the Fort Sumner Fire Station and City Hall.
One team was delayed for hours as one of our vehicles would not start. This starter switch was the culprit that cost us most of the day to get fixed after a long tow to a mechanic in Santa Rosa, off of our route. Such is life on the road.
We are grateful to Gary came out to the campground many miles from town to see if he could help us get the car started.
We thought we would try these motorcycles in place of the cars to save on fuel and repairs.
Actually, as the women's team ran towards Santa Fe, they met some bikers on the road who offered their motorcycles, but only for a quick photo opportunity. The flame would not stay lit on the motorcycle so they decided to run again.
They finally made it to Santa Fe in time to be greeted by over 50 children at the Boys and Girls Club there.
These kids got pretty excited about joining the team.
The club has many positve initiatives and values which were displayed all over the walls.
A big thank you to Jennifer Cale for hosting us at the Alto Street Unit Boy's and Girl's Club of Santa Fe.
Sunamita, our Santa Fe coordinator, organized the event and hosted the girls with her usual impeccable hospitality. Thanks Sunamita!
Afterwards the girls had some fun getting into the spirit of the old wild west.
Beautiful forms of cactus are now dotting the landscape as we run in the high desert of New Mexico.
Adobe architecture such as this building abound in central Santa Fe where the women's team stayed for the night.
Meanwhile, the men's team dined at a very nice Mexican restaurant called 'Carl's Chili Hills' in Moriarity.
They offered us a delicious array of dishes and desert for half price for which we are very grateful and 'full'.
In the end it's all about Peace and Harmony as expressed by some of the children we met today.
