Australia, 16 June: Brisbane Schools

The Steiner School - what a delightful school this is! The runners were greeted by teachers, students and even parents as they arrived with the famous Harmony Run torch. After being led through the charming and very natural school grounds to the class hall, the runners offered their perspective of how the world could be more harmonious to a wonderfully receptive audience. Students then offered their feelings and ideas, before passing the torch amoungst themselves to make heartfelt wishes for world harmony. The runners were then honored to have the flame from the Harmony Run torch be used to kindle the many lanterns and bon fire for the Steiner School's Winter Solstice celebration that evening. We applaud the warmth and wisdom of this important school, and hope to return next Harmony Run...

Runcorn Heights Primary (11:00am) What a fantastic school this is! We started the session by talking to the lower school and showing the World Harmony Run DVD.

Lots of interesting questions (and answers!) were exchanged before we all went down to the oval to run a relay with the torch. As great as that was, it got better! We were informed that the senior school was holding an Active-a-thon, and were invited to take the torch up to the top oval where it was being held, to give another talk. The purpose of the Active-a-thon is for students to raise money by asking people to sponsor them doing different sporting activities. Great timing! So by the end of the session, we had addressed the whole school and ran countless relays with very enthusiastic Runcorn Heights students. Thank you to the wonderful staff and students who really got behind us and helped make our day!

Craigslea State School (2:00pm) We were all kept on our toes by the very poignant questions asked by these savvy students and, to our immense delight, staff and students had taken the time to learn the World-Harmony-Run song! It was so powerful when the whole school joined in to sing it, and it has to be said: the team was very relieved!

We then orchestrated what was possibly our biggest torch-holding session yet… the whole school (560 students plus staff) turned out on the oval in full force, spread out in a large circle and linked hands to symbolise harmony.

We didn’t have as much time to pass the torch around as we would have liked, but the great energy and enthusiasm of the students definitely compensated.
