Australia 4 July: Boorowa, NSW

4 July 2007 - Sri Chinmoy Street, near Boorowa, NSW

What better way to christen a new street, named in honour of the World Harmony Run founder, than with a special World Harmony Run?

Australia'€™s first Sri Chinmoy Street was dedicated today - a road 14km west of Boorowa (near Young), about 120km from Canberra. The road, surrounded by beautiful green paddock, leads into a property owned by local residents Jan and Elizabeth Myburgh. Elizabeth is a teacher at Boorowa Central School, which in March hosted a special, one-day World Harmony Run event.

"This street not only honours Sri Chinmoy, but also what he stands for, which is a vision of a more peaceful and harmonious world," said Prachar Stegemann, director of the Canberra Sri Chinmoy Centre.

The street sign - installed only two hours previously - was unveiled by Elizabeth and one of her colleagues, Audrey Ward, from the Sri Chinmoy Centre. Elizabeth and her daughter then cut the official ribbon, opening the new Sri Chinmoy Street to the runners.

Taking a peace torch, five members of the World Harmony Run team, all in uniform, took the torch up and down the street, then returned to partake in a special cake to celebrate the occasion.

Weather-wise, it had been an unpredictable day - with moments of sunshine somehow interspersed with heavy rain, sleet and even hail (which made installing the sign an extra challenge). However, while the cold breeze was still blowing, the fine weather and clear skies arrived just in time for the ceremony. A perfect arrival!
