Australia 28 June: Perth

With all the activities, school visits and afternoon teas, we’d not yet had time to run all of the route through Perth. So this Saturday morning – clearing after yesterday’s dramatic weather – was a time to rectify this.

As the international running team was seeing the sites of Perth (or taking care of mundane tasks, such as laundry), it was two token Aussies – Prabuddha Nicol and Noivedya Juddery – who ran the distance from Quintilian School in Mount Claremont (two days after our memorable welcome there) to Scarborough.

Though the skies often threatened to open down on us, they never carried out this threat. Instead, it was a nice journey through some of the Perth suburbs, including the great City Beach.

The team then descended upon the local running shoe stores of Perth where old shoes that had faithfully carried them across the Nullarbor were discarded and replaced with new ones for the journey on to Darwin and beyond.

Situated high up on the banks of the Swan River, Kings Park offers impressive vistas of the city of Perth and its surrounds, an ideal venue for a picnic lunch.

Many of the team ventured along the pathways of the botanical gardens here, enjoying nature's beauty.

Many of the team then headed to Caversham Wildlife Park on the northern outskirts of Perth where we were guests of David and Pat Thorn.

The Park has a wide variety of native and farm animals, including over 80 kangaroos. David told us that the largest of his red kangaroos has a standing height of 8 feet! (about 2.5 metres). Everyone had a chance to hold and pet these beautiful creatures.

Some were cute...

(today we bid farewell to Friederike Makowka from Switzerland, a wonderful runner and great team member – having logged the highest day's mileage to date of 52 kilometres)

Some not so cute...

Some very heavy!...

Some wise...

(Uddyogini Hall will also be leaving our team today and resuming the World Harmony Run through the USA – our whole team has benefited from her experience, concern and enthusiasm.)

Some hungry...

(Kylie Williams, our invaluable co-ordinator for South Australia, report writer from Adelaide to Perth and photographer will also be leaving us in Perth, heading back to Adelaide.)

Some friendly...

Some over friendly...

Everyone had a great time at the park.

We were also treated to a display of sheep shearing. The wool from one of these merinos weighs 5 kg – enough to make 3 woollen suits!

The world record for the number of merinos sheared in 9 hours stands at 507!

All in all another great day!

– Noivedya Juddery and Pushpendra Uppal (Australia)
