Australia 28 July: Dunmarra – Renner Springs

Team A

For Team A our running day started with the acknowledgement of our accommodation host, Gary Frost.

Gary runs the Dunmarra Wayside Inn and Caravan Park, a small but popular spot for those travelling this long stretch of Stuart Highway. Our New Zealand representative, Nick File, showing his early morning enthusiasm, had already started running. We caught him up a few kilometres down the road smiling and obviously enjoying the cooler conditions the morning had to offer.

Today our team had to run the first and last 30 km of the day’s total distance (194 km). As we travel further inland, the scenery constantly changes and today I noticed our old friend ‘the cross wind’ that we experienced in the northwest of Western Australia, coming back to visit us.

Our new representatives who joined the team in Darwin are regularly commenting that the heat and dry conditions are making it difficult for running, but we keep reminding them that it is just a matter of time till they acclimatise.

Team captain for the day, Sandro Zincarini from Italy, suggested we have a little break between our two stints, so pulling into one of the many rest stops along the highway, the old faithful Frisbee was brought out to entertain and vary our exercise postures.

The Stuart Highway has been a friendly road to run on: less traffic, a flatter road surface and a much wider and smoother shoulder.

A welcome reprieve to tired legs and feet! Approaching our destination for the day, Renner Springs Desert Inn,

we were welcomed by a smiling face and some interesting inhabitants.

This oasis provided welcome relief in the form of an icy cold swimming pool and some fine entertainment for the boys – eight ball and darts.

Judy Blackman, the proprietor of the Desert Inn, arranged a real treat for the whole team by providing us with a low-cost delicious home-made meal, served up in their unique roadhouse dining room.

– Prabuddha Nicol (Australia)

Team B

Today’s team captain – Bernice Matthews from Canberra...

... and we started our journey from Dunmarra.

On the morning program it said: Running, running and running…

Today our women's team ran 72 kilometres in total.

We also came across an unusual sign. We didn’t understand the meaning, but just in case, Anastasia immediately brought out her new insect net hat. You never know…

We saw Brahmin cattle – so beautiful, the fur of the cattle is like white velvet and the hooves are like black polished shoes. When they look at you with their soft, big, brown eyes framed by unique long black eyelashes you feel drawn to their peacefulness.

At noon we had a special visit to Newcastle Waters School. When we ran in, we were welcomed by a group of kids with colourful beanies in all kind of patterns.

They showed great interest when we explained what the World Harmony Run is about.

Afterwards we ran and sang with them and they joined us in a spontaneous, lively way.

At the end they gave nice comments about the Run.

We thanked Rosemary and her assistant who supported the philosophy of the World Harmony Run.

– Elke Lindner (Germany)

Team C

We started our day by driving to Elliott, population 600, and met with Anne Pedersen, the Shire Service Manager for Elliott, at the council chambers.

One Torch-Bearer Award was presented to Jodie Nish, a local whose selfless work has inspired the community.

We also met with Mona Rennie, one of the Elders of Elliott whose parents had helped establish the town. The town of Elliott played a critical role in defending Australia in WWII.

Mona Rennie, who works as a teacher at Elliott school, then ran with us to the school where we were greeted by 40 children who played games and sang with us, having great fun!

We then got them to hold the Torch and make a wish for harmony and peace in the world.

The teachers then invited us to have tea with them, which we eagerly accepted, before starting our running for the day to Renner Springs.

– Runar Gigja (Iceland)

Another new team member needs an introduction today. Nick File from New Zealand joined us in Darwin and will see us through till the end of our long journey.

– Prabhakar Street (Canada)
