Australia 17 May: Khancoban – Omeo

Team A

Our team ran 28km – from Khancoban to Corryong.

John Anderson from 'Colours of Sound' choir joined the relay, as did several members of the Corryong Neighbourhood House who held balloons bearing messages of world harmony. Councillor Terry Forrest from Towong Shire was also present at the ceremony which was staged at the local Country Fire Authority shed.

The 'harmony balloons' were to be sent with love from Corryong Neighbourhood House to the ceremony in Omeo and, although unfavourable weather prevented this, the sweet intention remains.

Deepest gratitude to Jan Lewis for her tireless and tremendous efforts in organising this ceremony.

Team B

Rain! It rained all day – our first day of running wet.

A steep drop in temperature added to the 'enjoyment' as we headed up over the mountains towards Melbourne. The air was laden with moisture and the fields were green and lush...

and along the way, a few interested cows followed Misha down the road.

As soon as Dima said he would run a 10km stretch, we started our ascent and it didn't end until he had finished his entire run. Up, up and up...

As the air was getting colder, the dirt roads were getting steeper and slipperier after each hairpin turn. Eventually, this tortuous climb led us to this silent and isolated stretch of the route.

After finally reaching the pass, it started to snow but thankfully it was flat driving for a while before the downhill started.

We would have been lucky to have seen two or three cars on the whole route today through the mountains, which was just as well. I was praying it wouldn't get too much wetter, as the roads would have become muddier and far more difficult to negotiate.

The running itself, throughout this entire area, was totally refreshing for us. It was cold, wet and muddy but at the same time it was nourishing, fulfilling and inspiring.

We drove on to catch up to the other team in Omeo for an Aussie Rules football match.

We had a wonderful four-horse and fire truck escort into the field.

After circling the field, we went inside to the warmth of the clubhouse for a ceremony. By the way, the local team 'Omeo Benambra' won the match.

The torch was passed around and we were treated to a fantastic meal of vegetable lasagne – just what we needed after the long and cold day.

Team C

We started our beautiful rainy day by driving 113km towards Omeo, on a route that took us up to 1500 metres above sea level. It was a treacherous ascent, as the occasional rain and snow made the narrow mountain roads into one muddy pie.

Here you can see Peter having his daily flight of joy.

Here you have one of the best runners on the team crossing the road.

One of the daily sights that catch our eyes and capture our hearts, here in beautiful Australia.

Yvonne, (pictured left) of the Hinnomunjie highlands, member of the Dzogchen community of Australia, offered a Vagra prayer, sung in the ancient Mongolian language.

The song was finished with a dedication to the merits of the True Self, that we all embody.

– Runar Gigja (Iceland), Simone (Australia)

We are extremely grateful to the Khancoban Lakeside Resort for their openheartedness in sponsoring our cabin last night.
