Australia 18 May: Omeo – Stratford

Team A

One of the local residents of Swifts Creek, Merry-Belle, had the novel dream of putting together a relay involving her neighbours and the World Harmony Run team. Her dream was realised today, providing all present with a day of joy and sharing our dreams of a peaceful world.

First in the neighbourhood relay were Raymond and daughter Josephine on tandem bike, who carried the Torch 800 metres down the highway to William, his brother and mother Lolita.

The World Harmony Torch eventually made its way to Dr Flat as it was passed from Meg, to Merry-Belle, to Carla and Viveka, and to Brodie and Shelby. This intimate relay showed in microcosm what a sweet feeling can be achieved when we all work together towards a common goal.

Great Effort!

A big thank you to all involved, especially to Trevor from the Lion's Club for providing us with drinks and cakes, and to the High Country Singers who sang the 'Haida' (an Israeli gathering chant for peace) and 'Peace on Earth' (words and music by Nerida Kirov).

– Simone Dollas (Australia)

Team B

Today as usual we start running and running and running but I forget to take pictures so we ended up with only one picture from our running. Here it is!

Later in the day we where received in Stratford by the local firesquad and its captain, Mike Sears, to whom we presented a World Harmony Run Certificate of Appreciation.

All the local firesquad are volunteers and they do great work for their community. They showed us their daily work routine and their fire engines of which they are very proud. We took a few pictures and our boys of course started to play around with the equipment.

Team C

St Matthew's Anglican church in the town of Bruthen...

has a congregation of very welcoming and warm-hearted parishioners who received us after their Sunday morning service for tea and biscuits.

The church has a beautiful interior which was permeated by Sunday morning reverence and inspiration as we entered.

This fulfilling visit set us up for the longest day yet of running for our team, comprising 72kms between just four of us. It was a beautiful day, so we tied our laces and got to the running.

Down the road we had a very special traditional Aboriginal smoking ceremony to welcome us into the country of the Gunai/Kurnai people, at the Krowathunkooloong Keeping Place (Aboriginal Cultural Museum) which is run by the Bairnsdale GEGAC (Gippsland and East Gippsland Aboriginal Cooperative).

Blue Gum presided over the ceremony which was performed to cleanse us of any negative spirits or forces and welcome us into the land of their people.

It felt especially apt for us – who carry a torch all around this continent – to be accorded this special smoke ceremony with the use of fire.

We felt a bond of common cause and commitment that will carry us forward throughout our journey.

Aboriginal Elder Uncle Albert and the Mayor Mendi Urie were there to welcome us also. Both showed us hospitality that you would imagine only given to a family member, and we felt honoured by their kindness. A tour followed of the many significant cultural items lovingly preserved at the museum.

Grattan Mullet played the didgeridoo for us before we departed.

And Sandro, whose birthday is today, got to wear a special garment with great significance to the peoples of this region.

Happy Birthday Sandro!

Tonight we enjoyed an entirely filling meal thanks to The Star Hotel Bistro; it was so satisfying we even turned down desert! Yes it's true!
