Australia 1 July: Jurien Bay – Geraldton

Team A

After a long journey including three unscheduled days in Moscow, Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, Kritartha Brada from the Czech Republic, finally joined us today, the latest welcome addition to our running crew.

Team captain for the day was the cheery Misha Kulagin from Russia, who led from the front with the highest daily mileage, enabling some of the rest of us to enjoy a leisurely tourist ride.

Starting from Jurien Bay, our route wound north along Indian Ocean Drive, the soothing blue of the calm Indian Ocean to our left, all the way of our journey.

The empty pure white beaches and inviting blue water were too much to resist for too long. Captain Misha again led the way, demonstrating a fine aptitude for cool water swimming.

Every day in Australia we encounter the extraordinary in Nature. Driving towards Geraldton, we came across a few of the Leaning Trees of Greenough, a unique community of trees that does not conform to the standard manual of tree posture.

Those of us from the east coast are used to the sun rising from the sea. Now on the opposite side of the continent, arriving at our evening accommodation at Drummond Cove, we discover that the sun can also disappear into the sea...

Team B

An early morning walk along the wharf at Jurien Bay.

Along the road through brush-covered sand dunes from Jurien Bay to Greenough

Nataliya Lehonkova from Ukraine completing yet another 12 km.

Iva Nemcova from the Czech Republic also enjoying a long run.

The Memorial Dome has a beautiful position looking over Geraldton out to sea.

Janice and Hazel hold the torch under the Dome of birds.

Leap for joy.

Looking along the coastline, following our running route tomorrow, up towards Monkey Mia and, hopefully, some dolphins!

Our grateful thanks to Frank, his father Frank and mother for welcoming us into their Champion Bay Bed and Breakfast. A beautiful view from the hill!

Team C

Today after a very cool night we awoke to clear blue skies and the promise of an adventurous day. Rather than starting with running we drove back down the highway a little way to the township of Badgingarra, where 50 children from Badgingarra Primary School were eagerly awaiting our arrival.

No sooner had we arrived than the team took off with the children for a lap of the oval, passing the Torch between them with pure excitement and joy.

After singing the song with exuberant voices and enthusiastic actions the children formed a guard of honour leading us back to the highway and onward to Eneabba and our next school.

After visiting such a small school we did not think we would find an even smaller one, but 90 minutes later we were at Eneabba Primary School with a school population of just 40.

To celebrate the arrival of the World Harmony Run into Eneabba many of the children had dressed up in different international costumes with representation from Tibet, Mexico, Ancient Rome, France and many more. Even the principal Rick Ellison was decked out in a Hawaiian shirt, board shorts and lei around his neck, which only added to the relaxed and hospitable atmosphere of the occasion.

Eneabba is renowned as one of the hottest towns in Australia. In summer the temperature often soars beyond 40 degrees Celcius. On one day this January, 51.5 degrees was recorded! Luckily the weather was a much more pleasant 20 degrees today.

After running with the Torch many times around the oval, some of the team members displayed their considerable soccer prowess with the students, which was all great fun.

To cap it all off the staff and students had prepared a banquet meal, with Pavlova (a famous Australian desert), that was absolutely delightful.

Once all these festivities were concluded we drove to Dongarra to begin our running for the day. However, before we got down to business a few of us jumped into the irresistible surf.

So by the time we actually got around to running it was quite late and thus we concluded our last miles in the fading light as we ran into Geraldton.
