Australia 2 July: Geraldton – Overlander Road House

Team A

We left Geraldton early this morning graced by two rainbows.

On our run out of town, many locals touched the Torch. Workers and bus loads of children encouraged us with toots, waves and smiles.

There are many caravans on the road in Western Australia.

Lloyd and Marilyn are travelling around Australia taking time to meet people like us.

Cliff and Lynda travel selling children’s novelties.

Iva Nemcova from Czech Republic finishing another 5 km.

Elke Lindner from Germany on the road.

Binnu Primary School is a beautiful small country school with many talented runners.

Nishima Knowsley met a teacher who is a fellow New Zealander.

Sunset over Shark Bay Heritage Park as we neared our destination for the evening...

Team B

In the course of the journey around the continent, today was a watershed: the early morning chill a reminder of the winter conditions of southern Australia we have enjoyed for the past 6 weeks; the much warmer daytime temperatures and the first botherations from flies, a preview of the weeks to come as we head toward the tropical North.

Today the team made a serious migration north, covering 282 km running and a further 150 km driving, heading directly for the Equator.

Our day started by driving the distance to be run by Team A, with a welcome break for a reception at Northampton District High School.

The first thing that struck us was the hair: today was 'Crazy Hair Day', with everyone including the Principal, all the staff and students from Kindergarten to Year 10 sporting various outrageous hairstyles.

The hair lent a light-hearted mood to the occasion, that set the tone well for a brief but heartfelt presentation to the whole assembled school community.

After the team sang Sri Chinmoy's World-Harmony-Run Song, the students agreed they should sing for us as well. With most of the choir away in Perth, the remaining singers, ably conducted by Lucy, did the school proud with their rendition of the school's very own anthem.

Following a run around the oval with the Torch, various groups gathered to hold the Torch – including the Principal, John Faichney  with his two daughters, Holly and Sally.

Cara Payne's class of year 5, 6 and 7 students then let us know they would be honoured if we would visit their classroom to answer some of their questions. We were the ones honoured by the children's hospitality and eagerness to learn all about the World Harmony Run. This same class had produced several beautiful posters on the theme of Harmony.

Our thanks to Northampton District High School and especially to John Petchell for making all the arrangements for this memorable visit. An invitation to stay for morning tea was very tempting but the road beckoned and we had many miles yet to run before the day was done.

Team C

After a great night's sleep and a beautiful morning rain with spectacular rainbows, we headed into Geraldton to meet the Mayor at Geraldton Grammar School when one of our Aussie runners, Pushpendra Uppal, came across a cameraman from GWN called Troy who was wondering what we were doing running around with a Torch.

We explained it all to him in front of the camera and gave him a chance to hold the Torch so we could take a picture of him.

We then ran into Geraldton Grammar School where we were greeted by Deputy Principal John Royce, who introduced us to the Mayor of Geraldton-Greenough, Ian Carpenter, and escorted us to the assembly hall,

where we were met by 300 enthusiastic students who wanted to know all about our run for Peace and Harmony.

We played some games with them and explained our message which they, along with their teachers, easily understood and supported wholeheartedly.

We presented certificates to the school and to The City of Geraldton-Greenough for a great reception.

After the ceremony we were invited for morning tea with students, staff and the Mayor, which was enjoyed enormously.

We then ran 86 km between four of us – the  joyful winter sun in an almost cloudless sky blessing us with a perfect 24 degrees C temperature.

– Runar Gigja (Iceland)

Team RV

We offer our deep thanks to the staff of Drummond Cove Holiday Park for their kindness in putting us up last night.

Usually being in the R.V. is a day of rest, but today since the teams had a lot of kilometres to do we ran 20 km from our motor home. I was struck by the changes in the landscape as I ran from cultivated deep green hills and fields to more rough and scrubby brush and low trees.

The area became more arid and stark but at the same time suddenly the verge of the road was full of wild flowers of many colours lining the way as we trotted past. I decided to offer my thanks to these friends who seemed to be smiling and offering their own encouragement by making a small gallery here...

We happily drove on to Monkey Mia where we have a day off tomorrow to meet up with the local dolphin community. We arrived just in time for a glorious sunset and stroll along the beach where, as I roamed taking pictures, a lone dolphin came out of the darkening waters to say hello.
