Australia 12 July: Anna Plains Station – Broome

Team A

As we started this morning, the sun was rising to paint the sky for another spectacular day.

Leaving Anna Plains Station, we had a whole troupe of cheerleaders lining the gravel road on our way out: wallabies – boing! boing! enthusiasm boing!

Mind blowing – the size of this station for many of our European team members.

In Europe, a piece of land of this size is called a country!

Later on we were caught up by two 'Saints' – Oskar and Ravel Matthews. They are proud members of the Saints Football Club in Broome.

A few days earlier they had seen us running north as they were on their way to the Regional Gymnastic Competition in Karratha with their mother, Bridget. They found more details about the World Harmony Run on our website and were keen to run with us.

Barefoot and full of enthusiasm, Oskar and Ravel took the Torch and started running with us for more than a kilometre. It gave us so much joy seeing them carrying the Torch with so much ease and respect. When we split up with them we were not sure if we would meet them in the afternoon at a ceremony in Broome.

We found many ways to stay relaxed during our day of running, such as finding shade and keeping our feet refreshed...

Every day we come across many, many people who greet us on the road. Some stop to find out more and take pictures, while others simply send a wave or a honk of the horn as they pass by. To everyone encouraging us each day, thank you!

Another beautiful day on the World Harmony Run comes to an end here in tropical Broome.

Profile...

Iva Nemcova from Czech Republic is our No. 1 ultra-marathon runner, recently finishing 2nd in a 10 day race in New York with 634 Miles (over 1000 km).

Throughout the day you see her running quietly behind the Torch-bearer, clocking up extra miles.

Iva is generally the keeper of our sacred torches, each morning polishing and preparing them for their day's journey. Often she is the one handing you the Torch for your leg of the run and waiting at the back of the van as you come in.

Where there is a job to be done, Iva is there.

Team B

The day started with a delightful experience of bathing in an artesian hot tub on Anna Plains Station.

The 40 degree water gushes up from below via a 400 m pipe, originally drilled by the army when they had a settlement camp here.

A small oasis of trees and shrubs surround the tub, providing the perfect environment for a very refreshing dip before our running for the day commenced.

As the temperature is now really rising we are limiting our running to 6 km legs, allowing us to cover the distance swiftly.

Along the way we were met by Oskar and Ravel who, having already run with the girls' team earlier (see Team A report, above), joined us for a couple of kilometres, barefoot and all smiles.

Upon reaching Broome, we were invited to the local Kullari NAIDOC Festival. Lo and behold, there were Oskar and Ravel to join us, now full members of our team.

The World Harmony Run team were all invited on stage to be officially welcomed by the traditional owners of the country and to sing Sri Chinmoy's World-Harmony-Run Song. All the runners then announced their home country, which brought much excitement and cheering from the audience.

The Torch then travelled through the crowd.

The Festival continued through the evening, featuring local bands and dance troupes.

The featured dance troupe was The Modern Dreamtime Dancers who performed a beautiful and stirring dance.

Our final visit was to the famed Cable Beach to watch the last rays of sun blessing the white sandy shores.

Team C

After our dream sleep we departed the hospitality of Anna Plains Station and started our 90 km run towards Broome.

Thanks to Jon, Meredith and Russell who helped make our stay such a memorable one.

Birds are a constant source of interest and inspiration for the team as we pass through many landscapes. Today we were welcomed to the Broome area by a large variety of hawks.

The sun kept us company on our way, maybe a little bit too much company. The heat was almost unbearable at times. Before every run we poured water on us as well as into us, and a lot of it!

On the way we met many people very interested in what we were doing. Some ran with us and others held the Torch and made a wish for Harmony and Peace and wished us great success and an injury-free journey. This very nice family from Holland are on their second trip to Australia, now on their way to Darwin.

We met two great young athletes – Ravel and Oskar – who ran with us for 2 kilometres barefoot on the hot asphalt as their mother cheered them on from her car, very proud of them as they had just arrived from a gymnastic competition were they had triumphed.

After our great journey we finished running in Broome.
