Canada 14 June: New Minas, Nova Scotia

Live from the Road report by Seth Feldman and Caitlin, 14 June, New Minas:

New Minas Elementary School has striking qualities that were immediately evident. Principal Eric Trahan was upbeat, positive and genuinely happy to meet us as he welcomed us to the school. All the students are involved in the progressive “Peace Group” program which promotes dialogue and tries to instill a message of harmonious co-existence.

But the most exiting part of the ceremony was the performance of a musical variation on the World Harmony Run theme song, arranged by music teacher Ross Thompson. It was an upbeat and funky rendition and the kids grooved to the rhythm as they sang along with the music.

The 4th- and 5th-graders presented us with a “peace chain” that had signatures of the kids and words about harmony written on each link.

The ceremony ended as we led the school in a chant of the word harmony loud enough to be heard “all the way over in Africa.”
