Live from the road report by Robin Thompson:

Fern Hill School is a community-oriented place where parents and teachers work together to build a healthy, nurturing atmpsphere for the students.

Principal Elizabeth Milligan, parent Mr. Patel and the teachers who helped to organize the World Harmony Run event at the school today and make it a success are to be commended for the job they are doing for the kids in the school.

Three graduates of this very small, intimate family-type school, Daniel Boswell, Andrew Burnet, and Jaren Vanleeawen, had been chosen to each run a solo lap of the course with the torch, while the rest of the school chanted their names and cheered thunderously. The rest of the school then ran the course.

At the ceremony before the run, the 3 graduates read their final essays concerning their warm experiences at this school, paying tribute to their teachers with words of heartfelt gratitude.

At Charles H. Hulse Public School, the “Global Response team,” a student undertaking which seeks to raise funds for a variety of international causes, and the “Quilting Club” presented the WHR with a hand-painted T-shirt which pictures the globe populated with smiling faces on the front, and a torch painted on the back. The children signed their names and left their thumbprints on the shirt.

Some of the students recited a beautiful prayer by Mother Theresa.

This is another extraordinary school, which is very active in raising money for people of the world in need. In fact chidren from over 75 different nations attend this school.

After the event, Principal Pino Buffone, a man of deep conviction, invited us into the staff room for a snack and shared with us his philosophy of education which combines action outside of the class room with global awareness. After talking with us for a little while, he treated us to a brief tour of this charming school.
