Onward and forward World Harmony runners!

The tower-studded horizon of Toronto is far behind us and clear skies are ahead. The people we meet here in the southern Ontario countryside just outside Kingston are as bright and friendly as this beautiful sunny weather. This late spring season is a time when everything in nature is blossoming and life is approaching the peak of its fullness.

In the spirit of the season, Principal Scott MacDonald and the students and teachers of Sophiasburgh Central Public School near Picton, honoured themselves and the runners by planting a “World Harmony Tree” on the school's front lawn – a fitting metaphor for the seeds of harmony and growth inside each one of us that must be urtured. The tree will also become the emblem of the school’s “Earth Care” program, which succeeded in increasing recycling by 80 per cent!

7 track and field team members from Sydenham High school located in the town with the same name, persevered through the sultry afternoon heat for 11km. along the steep rolling hills of Highway 5. Cody Murray, A.J. Takala, Aaron Bruyns, Tom Glassco, Mike Bird, Brianna Jeffrey and Danielle Hammond were accompanied along the route by coach and teacher Leslie Taylor.

Allons de l'avant, coureurs de l'harmonie mondiale!

Derrière nous : les gratte-ciels torontois; devant nous, le ciel bleu!

Les gens que nous rencontrons dans les régions rurales du sud de l'Ontario, tout juste à l'extérieur de Kingston, sont aussi étincelants et cordiaux et que ce merveilleux temps ensoleillé. Cette fin de printemps est un moment où la nature bourgeonne et approche son apogée.

Dans l'esprit de cette saison printannière, le directeur de l'école publique Sophiasburgh Central, Scott MacDonald de même que les étudiants et professeurs de cette municipalité sise près de Northport, ont honoré la course en plantant un arbre de l'harmonie mondiale à l'avant de leur école. Ce symbole est bien choisi puisque ce sont les semences de l'harmonie qui sont en nous que nous devons faire croître. L'arbre sera aussi l'emblème de " Earth Care", un programme scolaire qui a réussi à augmenter de 80 pour cent le recyclage dans cette école!

Sept membres de l'équipe piste et pelouse de l'école secondaire Sydenham, dans la ville du même nom, ont parcouru 11 km le long des côtes escarpées de l'autoroute 5, et ce, par une chaleur torride. Pour l'occasion, Cody Murray, A.J. Takala, Aaron Bruyns, Tom Glassco, Mike Bird, Brianna Jeffrey et Danielle Hammond étaient accompagnés de leur entraîneure et professeure Leslie Taylor.

The run finished at Perth Road public school where all the students were gathered in anticipation of the runners, who arrived to the sound of shouts and cheers. And in the finest manner that befits a true role model, the runners of Sydenham High guided the torch around the massive circle of younger students. As they did so, their achievements both in athletics and as human beings shone clearly – a class act indeed!

La course se termina à l'école publique Perth Road où tous les étudiants étaient rassemblés et attendaient les coureurs; à leur arrivée, ces derniers furent accueillis par moult acclamations. Et tel qu'il se doit de la part d'étudiants exemplaires, les coureurs de l'école secondaire Sydenham passèrent le Flambeau de main à main autour de l'imposante ronde formée des plus jeunes élèves. Ce faisant, leurs accomplissements, tant au niveau athlétique que sur un plan humain, resplendissaient d'autant plus.

Tout un événement, il va sans dire!
