Germany 23 Sept.: Waren - Oranienburg

Waren - Rheinsberg - Zehdenick - Liebenwalde - Oranienburg

The deputy mayor came to see us off in Waren, at the start of what was to become a clear, sunny day.

Our dear coordinator forgot his files in the youth-hostel, prompting a quick return from the road. Due to later technical problems with mobile phone connections, this finally resulted in him, with two of our runners, searching for the Harmony cars for quite a while to catch up with them 5 hours after the start in Waren. Everything was fine though, because the team had enough runners anyway, so everyone was happy.

In Rheinsberg, Zehdenick and Bishop’s square in Liebenwalde we were met by great, friendly mayors, and in Oranienburg by friendly city representatives. In all places we were offered plentiful refreshments. Special mention must go to the beautiful buffet in Liebenwalde.

Fit local runners accompanied us for over 6k into Rheinsberg, and the mayor ran with us for the first few hundred metres out of the city,

and one of the local runners continued leapfrogging with us for a while,

towards Gransee, where a class of playful, joyful children met us on the roadside.

Into and out of Zehdenick and Bishops square in Liebenwalde we also had great local runners accompany us. From Zehdenick to Bishop’s square in Liebenwalde an enthusiastic running club called the wolves ran with us.

From near Liebenwalde a fit and fast runner politician accompanied us all the way to Oranienburg, were we were to have our lodgings in a gym behind a magnificent white castle. Such inspiring and vibrant people we met today.

Again we are awed by the splendour of nature. It thrills us and energises.

The German towns charm us. Our coordinator tells that typical for old German towns is that the town hall is located at the centre, flanked by two roads. Behind it is a patch of green followed by a small church.

We ran on many quaint small roads, including an atmospheric forest trail on the way to Oranienburg.

An inspiring anecdote: Our great and good French runner Unnatishil has ventured on a formidable task to run 42 marathons in 7 months. This means a marathon every 5 days. He did his first on 4th September in New York, his second in Paris, his third on a Peace Mile in Zurich, and today he did his fourth on the WHR from Waren to Zehdenick. With all stops and ceremonies included it took him 6.55 hours.

He will be running the marathons all over France and also in different places around the world. In Malaysia he will run 18 marathons.
