Italy 23 April: Mercenasco - Alessandria

All the kids had hand-printed T-shirts with their names on them...

We started this morning in Mercenasco. Lots of spectators, the mayor and kids from two schools gathered for a moving ceremony.

A street was dedicated in the name of the founder of the World Harmony Run, Sri Chinmoy.

The kids painted their own WHR T-shirts, with their names on them!

The mayor presented us with the kids' artwork and after a hearty singing performance by the kids and the passing of the torch, everyone joined in a run through the village.

Our next stop was at Candia. It was just a short meeting as we were pressed for time, but kids from the local school and the mayor lined up along the road. Our team gave all the kids a "high five" and after a brief torch passing ceremony we all ran together for a bit.

Next we arrived at a school in Chivasso. The teachers led the kids in a few laps around the school yard.

We went on to the primary school in Settimo Torinese. We sang the World Harmony Run Song in Italian! The kids performed a song for us and gave us lots of nice drawings for the next school!

A group of runners from the Running Center Club Torino welcomed us on the outskirts of Torino and ran with us, all the way through the city.

Further on, kids were waiting for us and together we ran through the old part of the city. More kids waited for us and the assessore of sports welcomed all of us at the city centre.

Highlight of the day was the reception at the United Nations in Torino. Three UN groups are located there: UNSCC, UNICRI and ITC-ILO.

The three directors, Francois Eyraud (ITC-ILO), Sandro Calvani (UNICRI) and Carlos Lopes (UNSSC) welcomed the WHR team.

Certificates of appreciation are given to the three directors...

The human chain starts to form...

Ms. June Wilson received the torch and passed it on to the three representatives.

400 employees passed the torch...

A huge banner made out of countless little works of art created by the schoolchildren greeted our runners...

All 400 employees lined up in a human chain and passed the torch from one person to the next!

After this great meeting we continued on, through the beautiful countryside of Piemonte and all the way to Alessandria.
