USA 11 May: Thebes, IL to Smithton, IL

I am now in a plane on my way to San Diego and am enjoying the time to reflect on all that has happened during the time I was out on the run.

The predominant sense I get is one of sincere gratitude to have had the opportunity to participate in this phenomenal event. So much kindness, hospitality, goodwill was showered upon myself and the team it feels like I was standing under a waterfall of positive human expression.

Countless people have gone out of their way to express their encouragement, support and oneness with the message that we are sharing as we make our way through the 48-mainland states of the USA and more than 70 countries around the world.

Yesterday Homagni and I were running along a quiet country road in Illinois and it was very tough going. We were both tired and were looking down the barrel of 10 miles each. This might not sound like much but after four or five days of 8-10 miles a day it starts to wear you down.

Anyway, as we were plodding through our miles a woman from Chester, which incidentally is the home of Popeye, stopped her car which was loaded up with her children. It turned out that she is home schooling them and they were very excited to learn all about the run and meet the two Australian members of the team.

As I was running a little while later two people who worked for the county rolled by at low speed and politely inquired if they could take my photograph. I replied, “Of course.” and then surreptitiously quickened my pace, ran a little taller and generally tried to look a little smarter than the road weary runner that I felt like at the time.

We finished our leg of the day’s 98 miles 2 miles past a small town called Ruma. We connected with the lunch crew, got our lunch and headed into the wonderful spiritual retreat called “Our Lady of the Snows.” This is a beautiful Catholic shrine which has numerous places for prayer and worship, a motel, a retirement home and a visitor’s centre.

The management of the Motel very kindly provided us with 4 complimentary rooms for two nights. Yes we are spending two nights in one place for the first time since we began because this is our first day off!! Yippee the team is very happy
