USA 1 June: Supai Canyon, AZ - Supai Canyon, AZ

Our only ceremony today was well and truly off the beaten track. It was a nine mile hike to the bottom of the Supai Canyon where we were to meet the Supai Indians who live there.

Hiking in was a breeze -took us about 3 hours as we kept stopping to take photos. Hiking out, we'll get to that.

Gregor, our coordinator for Arizona, with his daughter EC (Edythe Chloe) set up this truly remarkable event.

Horses are the main mode of transport on the canyon floor.

Having been surrounded by parched conditions for the first four hours we couldn't resist stopping for a swim in this beautiful waterfall.

WOW was that sweeeeeeet!

These horses were just galloping around the village - giving traffic a whole new meaning.

Bill organized for the local children to relay the torch from the waterfall back to the village.

Two of our relay runners.

At the village the elders received the torch.

Invoking the spirits of the canyon to bless the torch.

Homagni makes a new friend.

Now that's a smile.

Leaving at aroud 6.00 pm a few of us ran the 9 miles out of the canyon so we could get out before dark. We probably covered 18 miles for the day. The journey out of the canyon was very tough - as is evidenced by the video above.

Thanks to Denny's of Kingman AZ for feeding the portion of the team that remained topside.

– Salil
