Sir William had a distinguished legal career, culminating in over 10 years of service as a Justice of the High Court of Australia. He then served as Governor-General of Australia from 1995 until 2001. In 2001, he was awarded the Sydney Peace Prize, "for his consistent support of vulnerable and disadvantaged Australians and his strong commitment to the cause of reconciliation."

Sir William Deane offered his support for the World Harmony Run with the following comments:

“The World Harmony Run is a spectacular means of promoting mutual respect and understanding and Peace in our world. I congratulate and send my warm good wishes to all involved in the 2008 World Harmony Run in Australia.”
