San Marino - Urbino - Gubbio

Our first run of the day, to the Central Tourist Authority in San Marino, took us through the central Piazza where there was a demonstration taking place. It was not the sort of demonstration that you might imagine, although there were placards and a small crowd of people. The atmosphere was very relaxed and the people were chatting amongst themselves, while the placards lay propped up against a wall. We were received by the Minister for Tourism inside the Palazzo Tourismo and stayed for some time talking with her about the World Harmony Run and the Republic of San Marino. After our meeting we were again accompanied by the Gruppo Podistico di San Marino, plus a police escort, on our way to the border.

La nostra prima corsa del giorno, l'Autorità centrale del turismo a S.Marino, ci ha portati nella piazza principale dove c'era una dimostrazione in corso. Non era la sorta di dimodtrazioe che voi potete immaginare, sebbene ci fossero placards ed una piccola corona di persone. L'atmosfera era veramente rilassata e le persone stavano interagendo fra di loro . Siamo stati ricevuti dal Ministro del Turismo nel Palazzo del Turismo e siamo rimasti per qualche tempo a parlare con lei sulla World Harmony Run e la Repubblica di S.Marino. Dopo il nostro incontro siamo ancora stati accompagnati dal Gruppo Podistico di S.Marino, più una scorta di polizia, sulla nostra strada.

Back in Italy, we continued on to Urbino, a town famous as the birthplace of the artist Rafaello. It is a beautiful, ancient town with a similar layout to many of the towns in the region; steep, narrow streets leading to a central Piazza where the church and Municipio stand. The towns are absolutely unspoilt and Urbino has an especially peaceful and serene atmosphere. Here we were treated to refreshments by the very generous local authorities, and were fortunate to have time enough to enjoy them. The official from the Municipio who had greeted us on our arrival sat with us as we ate in a cafe on the Piazza. We even had gelati, which was delicious and made us all very happy. Unfortunately, ice cream is not the best food to eat just before running!

Tornati in Italia, abbiamo proseguito fino ad Urbino, una città famosa perchè luogo di nascita dell'artista Raffaello. E' una bellissima ed antica città simile a molte delle città della regione; strade strette conducono alla piazza centrale dove si trovano la chiesa ed il Municipio. Urbino specialmente ha un'atmosfera pacifica e serena. Qui ci è stato riservato un ristoro da autorità locali veramente generose, e siamo stati fortunati per avere abbastanza tempo per intrattenerci con loro. L'ufficiale del Municipio che ci ha accolti al nostro arrivo si è seduto con noi mentre mangiavamo in un caffè sulla piazza. Abbiamo ancora preso del gelato, delizioso e che ci ha resi tutti veramente felici. Sfortunatamente, il gelato non è il miglior cibo da mangiare subito prima di correre!

With full stomachs we continued running through the hills of Umbria to Gubbio, our final destination of the day. The route was exceptionally beautiful and always in bright sunshine that feels steadily hotter as we run southwards. The town of Gubbio was hung with flags that depicted the symbol of the region. The previous two Sundays had seen festivities for the patron saint of the town and the annual spring festival that has been celebrated since before the time of Christ. Now the two occasions have been combined as both a religious and secular celebration. Huge symbolic wooden trees are carried through the streets in a procession that is unique to this region of Italy. We were again greeted very cordially by the town representative who remembered meeting the Run when it was last in Gubbio 6 years ago. She showed us around the Municipio which was a tall building overlooking the Palazzo on the opposite side of the square. We sang our World Harmony Run song in the meeting room for the town council which had high ceilings and fantastic accoustics!

Con gli stomaci pieni abbiamo continuato a correre attraverso le colline dell'Umbria fino a Gubbio, la nostra destinazione finale del giorno. La strada era eccezionalmente bella e sempre sotto il luminoso sole che si sentiva gradatamente più caldo mentre correvamo verso sud. La città di Gubbio le precedenti due domeniche aveva visto le festività per il santo patrono della città e l'annuale festival di primavera che era stato celebrato fin da prima dei tempi di Cristo. Ora le due occasioni sono state combinate come un'unica religiosa e secolare celebrazione. Simbolici alberi di legno vengono portati attraverso le strade in una processione che è unica di questa regione d'Italia. Siamo ancora stati accolti molto cordialmente dal rappresentante della città che ha ricordato l'incontro della Run quando c'era stata l'ultima volta a Gubbio 6 anni prima. Ci ha fatto fare il giro intorno al Municipio che era una piccola costruzione oltre la vista del Palazzo sul lato opposto della piazza. Abbiamo cantato il nostro canto della WHR nella sala incontri per il concilio della città dotata di alti soffitti ed una fantastica acustica!

Our meal in the evening was in a local pizzeria and was delicious. We were even able to watch the A.C Milan v Liverpool match on TV, which greatly pleased the boys. Fortunately or unfortunately we left at half time, having seen the three Italian goals and feeling disappointed that the match was so one-sided. Little did we know how the match would unfold.... We spent the next day cursing ourselves for having left halfway through. In a restaurant full of ardent Italian soccer fans, that really would have been something to see!

Abbiamo cenato in una pizzeria locale ed è stato un pasto delizioso. Abbiamo avuto anche la possibilità di guardare la partita AC Milan e Liverpool in tv, che è piaciuta moltissimo ai ragazzi. Fortunatamente o sfortunatamente abbiamo dovuto lasciarla a metà tempo, dopo aver visto i tre goals italiani e sentendoci delusi che l'incontro fosse così unilaterale. Sapevamo poco di come l'incontro dovesse procedere... Abbiamo speso il giorno seguente maledicendo noi stessi per averlo lasciato a metà. In un ristorante pieno di ardenti italiani fans del calcio, realmente deve esserci stato qualcosa da vedere!
