Today’s journey was probably about as extreme as it gets on the World Harmony Run. We woke from our slumber in Malta at 3.30am and gathered down at the hotel lobby to wait for our transport to the ferry.

Il viaggio di oggi è stato probabilmente circa tanto estremo quanto continuare la World Harmony Run. Ci siamo svegliati nelle nostre sistemazioni in Malta alle 3.30 e radunati sotto l'ingresso dell'hotel per aspettare il nostro trasporto al traghetto.

At 5am we left for Italy and expected to catch a few more hours of sleep, however we soon realised that this would be next to impossible... for most. As soon as we left the port the turbulent sea began rocking this catamaran back and forth. Unlike much larger ships the rocking was totally unpredictable and straight away it had a drastic effect on the passengers. A lot of passengers were quite sick and there was a stampede towards the bathrooms! 5 of the team were among the unlucky, although miraculously one or two of the runners managed to sleep through the whole ordeal!

Shortly after 11 o’clock we arrived in the town of Reggio di Calabria on mainland Italy. There we visited the school of Reguim College and then the Mayor.

Alle 5 siamo partiti per l'Italia e abbiamo aspettato di prendere qualche ora di sonno, comunque abbiamo realizzato che questo era prossimo all'impossibile... per lo più. Non appena abbiamo lasciato il porto il turbolente mare ha iniziato a dondolare questo catamarano avanti ed indietro. Diversamente dalle navi molto più ampie il dondolamento era completamente imprevedibile e aveva un immediato e drastico effetto sui passeggeri. Molti passeggeri stavano abbastanza male e c'era un incedere deciso veso il bagno! 5 del team erano tra gli sfortunati, sebbene miracolosamente uno o due dei runners sono riusciti a dormire per tutta la dura prova!

Brevemente dopo le 11 siamo arrivati nella città di Reggio di Calabria nella principale terra italiana. Là abbiamo visitato la scuola del College Reguim e il sindaco.

We ran from the school entrance and up a few flights of stairs to a rooftop with a line of children cheering us the whole way.

Abbiamo corso dall'entrata della scuola e su per una volata di scale fino alla mansarda con una fila di bambini che ci acclamavano in tutti i modi.

Approximately 150 children gathered on this rooftop yard and surrounded us on all sides. They cheerfully sang and shouted into the blue sky. We briefly tried running but we were short of space.

Approssimativamente 150 bambini si sono radunati su questa mansarda e ci hanno circondato da tutti i lati. Hanno cantato con gioia e urlato nel cielo blu. Abbiamo brevemente provato a correre ma c'era poco spazio.

We hadn’t anticipated these meetings in Reggio di Calabria, which meant we could not start running until after 12 o’clock. This left us with an enormous task: to cover 170km in about five hours. We had to be as swift as swallows to achieve this and we were. We let one of the vans drive ahead to start running while the others had to undertake triple leap frogging in order to cover the distance quickly. The runners had a tough day and had to run about 20km each. The first hour’s run took us along some of the most beautiful coastline one can find, with lush green hills rolling down to the sea. We then travelled inland from west to east across the toe of Italy.

After five and a half hours of non-stop running, the first van reached our destination of Catanzaro. First we joined three cheerful runners who ran with us through the town and accompanied us towards a Unicef school.

Non avevamo anticipato questi incontri in Reggio di Calabria, che significava non poter cominciare a correre fin dopo le 12. Questo ci ha lasciato con un compito enorme: coprire 170 km in circa 5 ore. Dovevamo essere celeri quanto rondini per ottenere questo e lo siamo stati. Potevamo condurre uno dei furgoni avanti l'inizio della corsa mentre gli altri dovevano intraprendere un triplo salto mortale per coprire la distanza velocemente. I runners hanno avuto una dura giornata ed hanno corso 20 km ognuno.La corsa della prima ora ci ha presi lungo una delle più belle linee costiere che uno possa trovare, con lussureggianti verdi colline rotolando giù fino al mare. Abbiamo viaggiato così all'interno da ovest ad est attraverso lo stivale italiano. Dopo 5 ore e mezza di corsa non-stop, il primo furgone ha raggiunto la destinazione di Catanzaro. Prima si sono uniti a noi tre runners gioiosi che hanno corso con noi attraverso la città e ci hanno accompagnato verso la scuola Unicef.

For the last kilometre we were joined every 200 metres by groups of children cheering and throwing confetti. When we reached the school entrance we were overwhelmed by the tremendous welcome we received. The ecstatic crowd was made up of four schools all connected with Unicef, together with many parents, locals and onlookers. The joy expressed by each individual captured the true essence of the World Harmony Run; one of friendship and happiness. The children and adults alike soaked up this essence and it was truly evident from their enthusiasm. They presented us with medals and plaques and we were treated like celebrities with many, many autograph signings! Later that evening we arrived at our accommodation in the form of a dormitory school. We happily retired to our beds after a day that seemed like a week!

Dopo l'ultimo chilometro siamo stati raggiunti ogni 200 metri da gruppi di bambini che ci applaudivano e ci lanciavano confetti. Quando abbiamo raggiunto l'entrata della scuola siamo stati sopraffatti dal tremendo benvenuto che abbiamo ricevuto. L'estatica corona era stata preparata da 4 scuole tutte connesse con l'Unicef, insieme con molti genitori, gente del posto e visitatori. La gioia espressa da ogni individuo ha catturato la vera essenza della World Harmony Run; l'amicizia e la felicità. Bambini ed adulti hanno come assorbito questa essenza ed era veramente eviddente dal loro entusiasmo. Ci hanno presentato con medaglie e placche e ci hanno trattato come celebrità con molti, molti autografi firmati! La sera tardi siamo arrivati alla nostra sistemazione nella forma di un dormitorio della scuola. Siamo felicemente andati a riposare nei nostri letti dopo un giorno che è sembrato come una settimana!
