Agrigento - Caltanisseta - Enna

This morning the runners had an early awakening and were deprived of a well needed sleep. A loud rooster started, not crowing but roaring, at four o’clock in the morning right outside the hall in which we slept. He was competing with another rooster nearby and it sounded awful! After some sweet pastries for breakfast we seized the opportunity to visit the Valley of Temples, an ancient historical site just outside Agrigento.

Questa mattina i runners hanno avuto la sveglia presto e sono stati privati di un buon sonno di cui necessitavano. Un gallo ha iniziato ad alto volume, non cantando ma urlando, alle 4 di mattina giusto fuori la hall in cui noi dormivamo. Stava competendo con un altro gallo vicino e ciò suonava orribile! Dopo qualche pasta dolce per colazione abbiamo colto al volo l'opportunità di visitare la Valle dei Templi, un antico sito storico proprio fuori Agrigento.

There we met with the Mayor and Vice Mayor of Agrigento. We climbed a hill to the most prominent temple called the Temple of Concordia, which has stood for over 2000 years. From this historic hill the scenery was beautiful with brown fields below dotted with olive trees. On the way down a large group of curious tourists joined us in a short downhill run.

Là ci siamo incontrati con il sindaco ed il vicesindaco di Agrigento. Siamo saliti su una collina al più prominente tempio chiamato Tempio della Concordia, che è stato messo in piedi da oltre 2000 anni. Da questa storica collina lo scenario era bello con campi bruni sotto puntinati da alberi di olive. Nella strada sotto un ampio gruppo di curiosi turisti si è unito a noi in un breve corsa in discesa.

The sky was hazy in the morning, which dimmed the suns rays and gave great running conditions. We ran 25km to the town of Caltanisseta, stopping briefly to divide up and enjoy a big juicy watermelon which we had bought that morning.

Il cielo era offuscato nella mattina, cosa che indeboliva i raggi del sole e creava delle grandi condizioni per correre.Abbiamo corso 25 km fino alla città di Caltanissetta, ci siamo fermati brevemente per dividerci e gioire di una grande succosa anguria che avevamo comprato la mattina.

For the last 15km we were joined by a marathon runner, and we were surprised to hear that he had run a marathon the day before and still looked fresh. When running into Caltanisseta he did not spare us our energy and we had to keep a strong pace.

Per gli ultimi 15 km ci siamo uniti ad un maratoneta, e ci siamo sorpresi nell'ascoltare che aveva corso una maratona il giorno prima ed ancora sembrava fresco. Mentre correvamo in Caltanissetta non ha risparmiato le nostre energie e abbiamo tenuto un'andatura forte.

We were received by the President of Sport for the province and also by some council men who offered a shiny silver plaque to the team. Afterwards we were treated to some delicious ice cream from a nearby café, and before taking off we briefly met with the town Mayor who wished us well on our journey.

Siamo stati ricevuti dal Presidente dello Sport per la provincia ed anche da un uomo del consiglio che hanno offerto una splendente placca d'oro. Dopo ci è stato offerto un delizioso gelato dal caffè vicino, e prima di togliere il disturbo ci siamo brevemente incontrati con il sindaco della città che ci ha dato il buon augurio per il nostro viaggio.

In the afternoon we ran on beautiful country roads that meandered and zigzagged through hills with occasional long stretches. The fields of the undulating hills below displayed a full spectrum of yellows, greens and browns. To our amazement a heavy shower swept over the land and there were even some hailstones. One runner had to be rescued until the pounding hail passed. Another runner was soaked to the bone after 15 seconds of running in this downpour. However the clouds quickly passed giving a sense of newness to the landscape. Immediately the steam began rising off the roads raising the humidity, and a sweet smell of freshness wafted through the air.

At 6 o’clock we reached the outskirts of Enna, where we would finish our days running. It was a very steep climb up to the centre of this town, which sits on top of a very large hill and from which the view is incredible. In the main square we had a quick interview with a local station and also talked with any curious locals. Having found our accommodation for the night we went to dinner in a nearby pizzeria. This brought a smile to everyone’s faces because it was a nice change to all the pasta we had been eating. We even enjoyed some chips which some of us were craving!

Nel pomeriggio abbiamo corso sulle belle strade del paese che serpeggiavano e zigzagavano attraverso le colline con occasionali lunghe tirate. I campi delle ondulate colline sotto mostravano un ampio spettro di giallo, verde e marrone. Per il nostro divertimento una pesante pioggia si è riversata sul terreno e c'è stato anche qualche chicco di grandine. Un corridore ha dovuto essere soccorso fintanto che la battente grandine passasse. Un altro corridore era inzuppato fino all'osso dopo 15 secondi di corsa in questo acquazzone. Comunque le nuvole sono passate presto dando un senso di novità alla landa. Immediatamente il vapore ha iniziato a alzarsi dalle strade provocando umidità, ed un dolce profumo di freschezza si è levato nell'aria.

Alle 6 abbiamo raggiunto la periferia di Enna, dove abbiamo finito la nostra giornata di corsa. E' stata una salita veramente ripida fino al centro di questa città, che stava sulla vetta di una collina veramente ampia e da cui la vista era incredibile. Nella piazza centrale abbiamo avuto una veloce intervista con una stazione locale e anche parlato con alcuni curiosi del posto. Dopo aver trovato la nostra sistemazione per la notte siamo andati a mangiare in una pizzeria vicina. Questo ha portato un sorriso sul viso di ognuno perchè era un cambiamento carino a tutta la pasta che avevamo mangiato. Abbiamo anche mangiato qualche patatina che alcuni di noi desideravano ardentemente!
