New Zealand 30 October: Hicks Bay - Gisborne

The morning after at Hicks Bay Motor Lodge (www.hicksbaymotel.co.nz), operated by NZ Masters running champion John Campbell and his wife.

No time was wasted in heading to the beach for a swim...

John Campbell lends a hand of support to the World Harmony Run

It's a long way from anywhere down here...

It's Saturday, which means no school visits. Time for a tiki tour to see New Zealand's largest Pohutakawa tree

This tree is very sacred to the local Maori

Three amigos

It's big...very big

Uddipan was full of energy after being blessed by the Pohutakawa tree

For a moment Uddipan forgot that he was within filming range

Climbing the steps to the East Cape lighthouse...

Are we there yet?

It took several months to ship this lighthouse in pieces from nearby East Island (visible above left) and reassemble it on the safer shores of the mainland.

It's windier than it looks out here...

Houses out here have a rough time against the elements

Sean getting into the flow...

Har..moo...ny

Inside the First World War Memorial Church in Tikitiki village

The interior of this church was handcrafted with a unique Maori flavour

Christian and Maori decorum blends effortlessly in this wooden and stainedglass altarpiece

What happened to this strawberry?

Gisborne shows its stormier side as we arrive for the evening
