Iceland 1 July: Reykjavík - Hveragerði

Our first morning running on the beautiful and unique nation of Iceland got off to a very auspicious start.

Fyrsti dagurinn á hinni fögru og einstöku eyju, Íslandi, hófst við hæfi.

Starting in Rekjavik we were accompanied by children from two summer camps Þróttur and Ármann who joined us in a lap of honor around the sports ground.

Hlaupið hófst í Reykjavík og það voru börn af sumarnámskeiðum Þróttar og Ármanns sem hlupu með okkur heiðurshring í kringum Gervigrasvöllinn í Laugardal.

Chahida Hammerl of Austria let the team around the field.

Hin Austurríska Chahida Hammerl leiddi Friðarhlaupsliðið hringinn í kringum völlinn.

Suren, our Icelandic coordinator, arranged for Iceland's two main TV stations to come out for the event.

Aðalskipuleggjandi Friðarhlaupsins á Íslandi, Torfi Suren, fékk báðar helstu sjónvarpsstöðvarnar á Islandi til að mæta.

Sports and Education Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir (left) and Helga Guðrún Gudjónsdóttir, President of the Icelandic Youth Sports Federation, welcomed us to Iceland and wished us well for our upcoming journey. We were delighted to be able to present Ms. Jakobsdóttir and Ms. Guðjónsdóttir with our Torch Bearer award recognizing their service to Iceland sports.

Mr. Þorgrímur Þráinsson, Board member of the Iceland Sports Federation and Icelandic Olympic Committee, also received our Torch Bearer for his continuing service to sports development in Iceland.

Þorgrímur Þráinsson, stjórnarmaður ÍSÍ, tók jafnframt við medalíunni "Kyndilberi friðar" fyrir starf sitt í þágu íþrótta.

After the formal proceedings our special guests joined us for one final lap before we began our journey around the island of Iceland.

Að athöfninni lokinni hlupu allir saman í gegnum Laugardalinn.

Holding the torch high!!

Kyndlinum haldið hátt á loft!

Final farewell to our new friends from Reykjavik.

Við þennan hól fyrir utan Fjölskyldugarðinn, kvöddum við þessa nýju vini okkar frá Reykjavík.

Soon we were out of the city and running through the wide open country side of green hills and dramatic mountains.

Það leið ekki á löngu þar til við vorum komin út fyrir borgarmörkin og hlupum núna um grænar víðar lendur sem markaðar eru af hnarreistum fjöllum.

Petr from Slovakia and Hridananda from Columbia put in some final kilometres for the day.

Petr frá Slóvakíu og Hridananda frá Kólumbíu hlupu nokkra af síðustu kílómetrum dagsins.

The children of Hveragerði accompany us into town.

Börnin í Hveragerði hlupu með okkur í bæinn.

Aldís Hafsteinsdóttir, Mayor of Hveragerði welcomes the team and congratulates the students.

Aldís Hafsteinsdóttir, bæjarstjóri Hveragerðis, tók vel á móti Friðarhlaupsliðinu og krökkunum.

The future of Hveragerði is in good hands judging by these enthusiastic children.

Framtíð Hveragerðis er björt, ef marka má þessi áhugasömu börn.

We had a relay with the girls of Hveragerði against our women's team.

Við skipulögðum keppnisboðhlaup milli stelpnanna í Hveragerði og kvennanna í Friðarhlaupsliðinu.

Here you see the satisfied smile of victory.
